ThorsteinThorstein: This chair's upper was completely broken from the upright at the mortise, and the internal dowel holding the two together was broken. I had to drill it out leaving nearly a 1 cu. inch gouge. As I said, my tube was dry and crumbly, making it hard to spread. This also made clean up kind of iffy (even though water worked well), so I wound up over-applying and then sanding down a lot. Since the color wasn't a good match, I painted over the patch using craft acrylic paint, which took well to the filler. Finished it with Dura acrylic varnish. Now I have to refinish the rest of the chair :-(.
