Discipleship Essentials: A Comprehensive Guide to Strengthening Your Faith and Growing in Christ

Beth Fila: I have been using this update since it was published in 2019. I have found no better tool to disciple men ages 20-60 than this book. The previous edition was just as helpful. You won't find a better book to structure your discipling relationship. Chapters and questions provide phenomenal opportunities for discussion and growth. I grow in my spiritual, emotional, and relational maturity every time I take someone through it. I've used many different resources over the past decade, but this book remains at the top of the list.

M. I. Witherden: i bought this to help me disciple someone and have found that the layout and content really helpful. The only downside is that the 2 books that i bought have [Space left inentionally blank in the original book.] where there should be space to write your answers. I am presuming that this is a printing error and should have been removed. This oversight sadly makes using the book a little awkward for you to write responses to questions.

tonysch: So far is seems like good quality material. The section on evangelism is too much friendship slanted, and needs to be balanced with the Bible, but that is the work of any text.

George Jones: This is a Bible study to help a person or a small group of people, to grow in Christ. Good material to go through as a group for encouragement and knowledge so that Christians can closely follow the example of Jesus and His disciples. Working through will deepen one's knowledge of essential Christian teaching and strengthen one's faith. This is a wonderful answer to the dilemma of having people converted to Christianity without laying a good foundation to build on. Discipleship training is so needed in the Body of Christ today as our pressured, busy lives take time that should be given to learning how to be a disciple of Jesus. Even if a person goes through this workbook alone, the benefits would be very worthwhile.

mike roth: this book really surpassed my expectations. I have started a lot of books like this, most of them over-promising and under-delivering. This book is not flashy or trendy, but is simple, quality discipleship material. I'm going through the book with 3 other guys. We do the reading/reflecting on our own and then meet Saturday mornings at A&W to talk about what we're learning. What i like it that the content is scripture based, the workload is challenging(but not unrealistic), and the book covers all the basic aspects of what it means to be a dedicated Christ-follower, within 6 months. Would recommend it to anyone wanting to grow in their spiritual maturity, and to any churches looking for a solid discipleship tool.

Dr. David P. Craig: I have used this workbook with men one on one; in a triad; and in a group of four. In all three groups the participants have enjoyed the study, the group time, and have gone on to make more disciples by using the book to disciple others. As a pastor and life Coach I have used this tool for a few years now, and still think it's the best tool to get Christians together and grounded in the Christian basics - theologically, philosophically, and with a Christo-centric focus for all of life.

In Ogden's own words he says he designed this discipleship workbook as a tool to accomplish these three elements to create a climate for the Holy Spirit to bring accelerated growth:

1) "The first element is the unchanging truth of God's word" (each chapter contains a core truth based on a memory verse, and includes an inductive bible study with discussion questions based on the passage for study, discussion, and application).

akoloutheo: This revised edition of Ogden's book has hours of time, experimentation, and thought put into it. It is useful for laying down the essentials for guiding someone into the journey of becoming apprentices of Jesus and becoming more like Him. It is simple enough to guide a new believer, yet comprehensive in scope to provide a complete framework for the Christian life for those who have never been on an intentional discipleship journey. I am presently using it as the basic curriculum/content for the Life-to-Life discipleship process in our church. By Life-to-Life I mean, 2 to 3 believers meeting together for a season of time with an intentional goal to grow in Christian maturity in the context of one life sharpening another life i.e. community. I like the way Ogden lays out the structure of each chapter by focusing on a core truth, then a memory verse, bible study, and reading that gives a simple explanation of the topic for that week. Woven into each bible study is the practice of "inductive study method" which equips the learner how to study scripture for him/herself.
