Kindle Customer: The two main characters, Devlin and Falco are teamed up to solve a series of murders. The location for the book is Birmingham,AL where most of the action takes place. They become good partners and work together to solve the murders. The story also sets out to show how the partnership develops and aids in solving the mystery.

ljp: Good fast paced detective story got a bit complicated with flash backs but overall very good

brianfire: The police procedural side of the storyline is a bit weak but is more than made up for with a very intriguing plot and the ever shifting choice of prime asset and plot scenarios.

Amazon Customer: Quite liked this but I did find that the baddie talking in background was the same as in finlay o'sullivan book 2 that I had just read. Seemed formulaic. I didn't like the baddie talking which I suppose was meant to make us feel the tension but it only irritated me.

Yvonne C.: First time I have read this author. I really enjoyed the book, there are twists and turns throughout the book and though most were somewhat predictable it did not take any enjoyment from the story.

Sandhya Rao: First half was so slow, too slow IMO for an ongoing fresh case with high stakes. But the second half really picked up. The twists were good, although some were predictable, especially coz the was a POV that gave some things away, but I think that was intended anyway. The one thing I didn't like much, and I'm not sure if it was intended, but <spoiler> I didn't like that one of the major players in the mystery, and the biggest heartbreaker of them all, was kept away from the readers and only spoken about in third person. We never got to meet her, and she was a major piece of the puzzle with emotional attachment to the FMC and her family who we were introduced too, but SHE herself was never introduced. I didn't like that, maybe it was intended, but I still didn't like it </spoiler>
The FMC was sort of middling for me. She didn't really WOW me with her detective skills and I feel she was a little naive and didn't really have the drive to be gritty and forceful enough. But then this is our first intro of her, and this case was meant to "open her eyes" so I guess she'll become more ruthless and reckless in the next books. Overall, I think I really liked the book. And the...

Pisces51: My Review 3.4 Stars***
I finished reading this Amazon First Reads selection from July of this year just last night. Unlike the prior two novels I have recently plucked from the "First Reads" Folders, this novel is a "kick off" to a 2-book series by a well established USA Today Best Selling Author (and not a debut novel from a new author).
Obviously I am either a glutton for punishment all of a sudden or otherwise feel the need to figuratively play Russian Roulette for the past couple of weeks. The Amazon First Read Folders have never been generous or friendly to me in the past (I have recently started not picking a book at all unless it really snags my interest). Having said that, out of the past seven (7) books I've read, a total of three (3) were from First Read Selections.
So okay, about this book. The story starts with the female protagonist (Detective Kerri Devlin) embroiled in a stalemate life and death struggle with an unknown man who is obviously a merciless and dangerous opponent. The tense "back and forth" period between Kerri and the bad guy is high octane suspense while each party leverages the dialogue and body moves to gain the upper hand. It...
