J.E.D.: Wow! This is the first slow cooker book I've actually enjoyed. They have great tips for preserving the texture of foods, like placing vegetables in foil packets so the won't become mush in a stew. I enjoy prepping ingredients and don't mind taking the time, but if you're looking for a "dump and go" sort of book you may wish to look elsewhere. The recipes are straightforward, generally don't call for exotic ingredients, and don't overuse processed items.
I've tried eight recipes in the three weeks I've had this book. Each has been delicious. The sticky wings were particularly excellent. Four more copies soon followed to be given to family coworkers. It's that good! The only thing I'm not impressed with is the binding. The quality is okay, but spiral binding would be more appropriate.

Anya: NOTE: If you do not like prep work for slow cooker and want "easy, throw together in a pot and wait" type of recipes, this book is not for you. If you don't mind some extra prep work before putting ingredients into slow cooker, read on!
I purchased this book about a month ago and couldn't wait to try it. I own a decent slow cooker and I love the idea of putting my meals together and not having to watch them while they cook, or have them ready by the time I get home from work. Unfortunately A LOT of slow cooker recipes I've tried in the past (recipe books and online) yielded bland results, and a couple times I had to just throw the whole meal away just because it tasted so bad. So I was on a hunt for a good slow cooker recipe book.
So far I have tried just a few recipes and I have to say, although I have not tried more recipes then I would have liked, this is THE BEST slow cooking recipe book I've seen so far. As usual the authors go into details regarding why they made certain modifications to the recipes and why traditional recipes would not work as well. I love reading the science behind cooking, but if you are not into that then it is very easy to skip. Almost all of...

Marilyn Riopel: I just got a wonderful slow cooker that has the ability to brown meat and veggies right in the container. What a bonus. This would have been a 5 star book had it been updated but it wasn't hard to substitute the cooker for the fry pan as everything else was the same. I've tried several recipes already and they were a success. But, very valuable is the general information in the front of the book. With the knowledge I've gained, if I want to vary the recipe to something closer that I make differently, I was able to do it with confidence. I definitely recommend this book!

sandra macdonald: The book is visually great, and has many helpful tips and instructions, particularly the paragraph with every recipe that explains what the testers did and why they did i, and why some things don't work.
Unfortunately, like most slow cooker books, the quantities are for larger numbers of people. I emailed the Test Kitchen and was told that I should feel free to experiment, but that they could not guarantee the results. This is great for a test kitchen, but not so much for dinner every night!!

SW: I'm a big fan of Cook's Illustrated . I get their flagship magazine and Cook's Country and watch both America's Test Kitchen versions faithfully on PBS. I'm also a frequent buyer of their cookbooks and have found many of my all-time favorite recipes in their pages.
Unfortunately, after making three of the recipes from "Slow Cooker Revolution," I'm not sold on this particular effort. All were OK, none spectacular, and, as far as I can tell, just about every one previously published. (A cheat often used by Cook's, but still annoying for its most loyal readers.)
My major complaint--and it seems to be in most of the recipes, not just the three I've attempted so far--is that Cook's takes what is best about the slow cooker, it's convenience (set it and forget it one-pot meals), and throws it out the window by requiring countless pre-cooking steps--far more than just browning meat or sautéing vegetables--that often dirty multiple pots, pans and bowls before you ever even get the ingredients into the slow cooker itself. There's also a good bit of post-cooking in many of these recipes, along with mid-cooking steps/additions that means you're constantly...

SLS: Warning!! Yes, this IS a long review, and getting longer all the time with each recipe I try. I apologize for this and am working on being less wordy in future reviews.
So What's the "Revolution"?
It's supposed to be about debunking several myths about slow cooking, showing us that:
1) Slow-cooking is not about dumping unprepared stuff into a pot nor about the belief that if you just cook something long enough and with enough other stuff, it will always be edible
2) Great results occasionally require more appliances than just your slow cooker
3) Some ingredients can benefit from additional preparation
Two Recipes I sampled right away:

* How could I NOT try a recipe that uses this most divine gift to modern civilization? It's the sort of dessert that has to be preceded by weeks of an ascetic diet, as it boasts whole milk, heavy cream, and 9 egg yolks. But it illustrates the importance of prep work in slow-cooking: the challah bread cubes need to be "baked" in a low temp oven for 40 minutes. Had the untoasted bread simply been placed right from the loaf and into the pot, I think it...
