Bob: I’ve had this for many years. It’s a great all around cookbook. This copy was for my daughter who just moved into her own apartment. I’ve also bought it for each of my two sons

SharonSharon: I just got this book today. My son & daughter-in-law have it and they love it so I decided to buy it. Well the first recipe I wanted to try is missing part of the ingredients. It’s page 787, Rustic French Bread. Can someone tell me how much salt is required for this recipe? Thank you. I hope there aren’t other things missing from this book. Will update at a later time.

GG: I was excited to get this, but it was shoved into the Amazon box with other books, resulting in a ripped paper cover. Not worth returning, just really annoying.

I am Canadian!: Saw Mark Bittman on the today show and was impressed with his ability to communicate the preparation of food in a simple straightforward manner to people without food prep training or experience. This book has become my new best friend in the kitchen. Simple processes and basic recipes abound, with loads of variations for you to try. Mark teaches you how to cook while opening the door to your own inspiration.

Sharon Acker: Great gift to a new cook to discover the use of spices and open the imagination on cooking everything.

RubyT: Such a great simple comprehensive cookbook. I bought two originally for new cooks in the family. I loved the basic references for sauces and other recipes that I then purchased a third for myself. Wonderful for the beginner or experienced chef

Dale Barber: This book is spectacular, I’ve made about a dozen new recipes so far. Many recipes offer lots of variables, which is excellent.

I even photocopy the herb & spice lexicon and taped them inside my spice cupboard.

Really good resource, best cook book I have ever found and intend on having it for ever.

mrsnorman: Bought on the recommendation of an (American) friend, this book has fast become invaluable in my kitchen taking you through pretty much how to cook everything — just like the title says. Although American, this book does come with an easy-to-follow conversion guide at the back. I’ve no idea how Mark Bittman has done it — I don’t think I’ll ever get through every suggestion in this book, let alone in his others! Highly recommended for everyone from beginners to more experienced cooks; there’s bound to be something new to learn or try.
