Wasn’t surprised it didn’t have a sheath, but I wish they wouldn’t send pictures with a sheath if there isn’t one coming with it

RossRoss: This hawk came branded as ATC and not Cold Steel but the quality seems to be about the same as my previous Cold Steel Pipe Hawk. The eye required a few burs to be filled down as expected and it seems to be a bit smaller as a Cold Steel handle I have does not fit fully without sanding it down. After stripping the terrible black paint from the head then sanding and oiling the handle it is a nice looking hawk.

Devil Dan: Many of these different hawks come with the same length handle regardless of the head weight, and that tells you that you must find the correct gripping length for your weight of hawk head and strength of forearm. One size does NOT fit all. To balance the hawk for my arm and hand, I wound up cutting about three inches from the bottom of the hickory handle. Take a little off the end and see how it does, and take more off if needed. You can always remove annother half inch, but you can't add it back on! Then, using a circular file, I filed in a series of eight circular grooves (spaced at one inch apart) at the bottom of the handle for a better hand grip. Next I drilled a hole in the bottom of the handle and added a four-strand, round braided thong of oil tanned hide which also added a stop for the heel of my gripping hand. I removed the black paint from the head and then properly sharpened the bit. Also the hammer head needed to be "pinged" with a hard steel file so it would not slip off nail heads. Finally, to correct the 1/64" play betwen the handle and the wobbling head, I added a piece of very thin pigskin around the handle and reinserted it in the head. Do not use glue to firm...

Shane C: Heavier than a Trail Hawk with a little more cutting edge. Has a usable hammer poll for tent stakes or hitting things. Edge was dull out of the box.
Get rid of the set screw. Sharpen it (I also stripped the head) and use it. Great for camp tasks and light cutting/firewood prep.
UPDATE 2/1/2015
I love, with a deep and abiding love, this hawk. My only mods were stripping the head and staining the handle. I spent some time refining the edge and it's worth it.
I live in the SE US, and there is plenty of dead fallen wood for fire, and plenty of trees in the 3" to 4" range for shelter making. The hawk is lighter than an axe or hatchet, does a great job cutting, and is versatile.
The pipe poll works just fine for hammering stakes for tarp shelters, cracking pecans, etc.
It's not a fantastic splitter, but you can use the head to whittle a wedge and use the poll to hammer it through. I'm very pleased. If it were lost or stolen I would replace it immediately.
UPDATE 10/11/2017
I still really, like this hawk. I have had to replace the handle after a lot of use, but they are cheap to purchase if you don't fee like making your own. I...

Diceman: I love this hawk. I can't stress that enough. Now bear in mind that when you get this you may need to do some work to it. However I feel that that little bit of work can take a 4/5 star tomahawk to a 5/5 star. That is how you get my rating.
First of all the tomahawk comes assembled but you'll want to take it apart. The handle is American Hickory so it's pretty strong and dense wood. Ideal for use in the fashion it's designed for. I sanded down the shaft just a bit with 150 grit sandpaper to get the light finish they put on it off. Then I chose a black stain for the wood and let that sink in over a couple coats. Then I sealed it with boiled linseed oil. Bear in mind that the stain and the linseed are probably not going to look ideal to you eyes at first but work with it and give it time. The real finish will come with time and use.
The head is the tricky part. There is a hole in the side of the head where a tension screw holds the head more firmly to the shaft. However I find that this screw is really not all that needed. I removed mine but later ran into some issues with the head becoming a bit loose. After that I put the screw back in and it fixed that right up....
