chuck: The media could not be loaded.  So instead of spending over 3k for an attic lift already made. I purchased the champion electric hoist and built my own. Works great and I spent a lot less than 3k.. lol.. plus the satisfaction of making it myself.

Just wish the cord that controls the unit was longer.

Raymond Lewis Marsh: I needed to lift a large cumbersome attic ladder into place by myself. Originally I was going to use a simple pullers system but decided to try this hoist out. Man am I glad I did. This unit is extremely capable and works extremely smoothly and is very powerful. The safety shut off works flawlessly. You can double the cable and double the lifting capacity as advertised.
When I tied off the attic ladder and put it to work it was great! It held the ladder in position until I secured it safely and then I released it from the ladder. I will use this hoist for lifting heavy equipment and large cabinets onto dollies...saving my back!
There are some dead trees in the back yard and I will use this hoist to lift them and then relocate them for resewing.
This is a well made tool and works great. If you need a hoist for the money this is a exceptional deal.

Michael (Raleigh, NC)Michael (Raleigh, NC): I bought and installed the Champion 440# hoist to lift a heavy 14.5 canoe close to the ceiling in my garage. I wanted to be able to back my trailer (converted to hold a canoe and kayak) into the garage and then hoist the canoe up without doing the lifting myself (I'm over 60 and no longer interested in lifting heavy things over my head). It was admittedly a chore to install on the ceiling by myself due to it's weight and the lack of a ladder that was the optimum height. I ended up going into the attic and placing a 2x6 board and 5' length of unistrut ($18 for a ten foot section at a local electrical supply store) across the roof joists and drilling holes to the ceiling below. I used a half dozen 7" long bolts (3/8" inch) and washers/nuts to connect a similar sized piece of unistrut (the other half of the ten foot piece I cut in two) below. The trick was to leave a half inch gap and the bolt on the end out of the way so I could slip the hoist mounting brackets between the ceiling and the unistrut while I was perched precariously on the ladder (Yes, it would have been easier and safer to have a helper but I was without that day). I previously cut a slit in the...

Heavy D: This is a good hoist for the money. I used it only once and it worked fine. I found the cable length a bit longer and thicker than several others, and this was a major factor in my decision to buy this one. I didn't want a hoist that would be maxed out and at its limit, but rather have one that's got some reserve capacity. Plenty of lifting power. Like all the hoists I looked at though, a little longer control cable would have been nice. If you're lifting something up high, and want to remain on the ground, you can't because the controller is only a few feet long, so you'd need to be at the same height as the hoist. I'd buy this again.

VeskoVesko: I ordered this winch so that I can lift heavy things off (if/when necessary) of my truck including my deer after any successful hunts. I was looking at a lot other options like the poles installed in the hitch of the truck, ratchet system, manual winch etc. but they were either too complicated to install/adapt to my garage setting, or kinda expensive. So I figured I should get something already pre-assembled and easy t use. So! I got this winch. The price was really acceptable and in my range, but the thing was, my house is built in a way that the installation would be a breeze. After some measurements and a short trip to Lowe's, I got two 2"x8" wood planks,4 threaded rods, 5 wood screws and bunch of nuts and washers. I did not install it according the manufacturer because I had access to ceiling. So basically I put a flat 2x8 across several joists and threaded the four long bolts through the ceiling into the garage. From underneath I put another 2x8 plank and then I bolted the unit to the threaded rods. Went back up to the attic and tightened them up until the unit was well fixed against the ceiling. The two 2x8"s act like a sandwich and fixed it over three...
