Kathleen Wogen: The story was told well by starting in present time and then previous time, and then back again. The descriptions of events were rather unbelievable. However, the last chapters were well done as to all Carly needed to learn and could be good advice for many.

Vicki Reynoldson: I loved this book as well as all of her others that I have read. That is why I gave the 5 stars in the rating. There was one thing I didn’t’t like and that was the ending, I just wasn’t quite ready to let this one to be over!

P. Didur: Catherine Ryan Hyde succeeds again with a story that grabs you and won't let go. This author always causes us to pause and think, taking us into an unpredictable and unstable life. This story made me grateful for the responsible adults I had in my life, and for having a home. What these two teenage girls live through (and worse) is unfortunately too common.

julie futcher: A rather unusual story, written from the point of view of two young girls left without parents and trying to avoid foster care. I thoroughly enjoyed it

betsy: I award few 5 stars but I very much enjoyed this book. It is a story of two resilient sisters who find themselves without parents, a home or a direction in life. The characters are well defined, their adventures are interesting, and the ending of the story is not one which I expected. The book could be enjoyed by young and mature readers. For the older reader it is a reminder of what it was like to be a belligerent teenager and where that attitude can lead; for the younger reader there is a lesson to be learned by not being so. The description of the desert scenes are very true to life. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Sherry G.: The only downside for me was the switching back and forth from “now” to “then”. Finally got a handle on it, mostly. The story is hard to read yet believable. Carly’s struggles opened my eyes to the hardship and danger of homelessness. It is very real.
