DIY Monkey: My furnace is updraft with air supply and gas from the right. It has spring retention holding the igniter, so in one sense, easy to change. Access to the igniter install location is behind the large air supply PVC, so visibility is nil and one has to contort to reach the spring release. This replacement igniter seems high quality, however when installed in it's normal vertical position, the flame would not ignite consistently. It seems the positioning is too far to the side of the burner. I was able to achieve consistent ignition by tilting the ceramic base so the igniter element locates closer to the burner gas path. This was done by releasing the right side igniter retaining clip (one cannot bend the igniter element without breakage). I made a small wedge installed between the right side of the igniter ceramic and the mounting receptacle (furnace frame) to retain the igniter in a fixed position, and so it wouldn't eventually fall completely out of it's mounting clip. It's been working consistently for several weeks now.

TRP: Ordered a pair of these for spares(I have 2 furnaces). The shown connector is correct for my furnace, but the shipped parts have different connectors. Of course they come with a pair of marrettes so that you can either a) cut the connectors off both the furnace harness and the ignitor and just twist the wires together, or b) cut the connectors off only the old and new parts and marrette the old connector wires to those of the new ignitor. This keeps the furnace harness intact. A cleaner alternative, c) would be to slide the terminals out of the old and new connector housings and install the terminals from the new ignitor into the old housing if they are of the same type as are mine. You simply need to compress the locking wings/tabs on the terminals(look down in there) so that you can back them out of the housings. Then spread them again before re-inserting.

Phill: I woke up at 5 am on Dec 24 to a cold house. Furnace was not working. It would turn on then turn off. After several hours of youtube diagnosing and checking my furnace I concluded that furnace had bad hsi. Searched for local places that sold hsi. None were available. Searched my trusty amazon for one day delivery and sure enough North American HVAC had several hsi that would fit my carrier furnace Norton 271 M hsi. Purchased two of them at 8 am. Both arrived at my house at 6 pm. I installed it and BAM, furnace was working again. Amazon will have my business for next 5 years. Stories of Amazon not being able to fulfill their delivery promise is greatly exaggerated. It would have cost me hundreds of dollars and possibly days of delay to get my hvac fixed if I called local hvac company.

Bill: Never ever try to fix your own furnace!!!

However - we had an emergency and our house was 40 degrees (and dropping) and the repair man was slammed and couldn't get to our house for 3 days. After a quick youtube video - I figured out what the furnace error code indicated - removed one small screw holding the ignitor in place - it was clearly broken - removed/replaced a second screw to hold the ignitor in place - used a multi-meter to test voltage in the line - and popped it back in place. Viola! Heat!!! Thank you!!!!!

**Just for safety I still had the furnace repair man come by to check my work. Net cost $60 - he said he would have charged me $60 for this part to come off his truck.

Also - please note that I am not a repair man or salesman for this product - I don't have any clue about part numbers or whether this part will work for you. Best to research your equipment and search for a manual. Happy searching!

Pyramid: With the arrival of the much cooler weather (yay) the furnace was running but then failed.
The culprit was the igniter and I had one in stock for just such an event. To keep a back-up ready I hunted Amazon on the chance there may be an igniter stocked.
Sure enough I found this one and saved some money to boot. The best thing was it arrived Wednesday! That was fast!
Oh yes, it works just fine!

NOTE, I've been told you should never touch the element as the oil from your fingers/hand will cause the element to fail prematurely.
