The buttons are pretty easy to operate. You’re not going to hand this down to your grandkids, but it does the job for small stuff.

abwx: Amazon buyers are not the customers who matter. The packaging was obviously designed to be sold to hardware store chains who were more concerned about theft than about the happiness of the end customer. It probably looks good hanging on a hook, and most importantly, can't be opened without tools and patience. Once opened, it can't be tried out until you figure out how to open the case (clue - the triangle/arrow is wrong) where the battery will be found, and the caliper's battery compartment (no triangle/arrow, slides in illogical, improbable direction). "Instructions and callouts on reverse side" actually means on the inside of a folded sheet that can't be removed from the customer-proof packaging without damaging it, since the hang-hole is *sealed* through a punch-out in the instructions, and you have to cut through three times as much of the customer-despising packaging to get the sheet out as you did to get the tool and case out. So trim off the upper part of the sheet, hope you didn't tear theactual instructions too badly (I did), roll your eyes at the non-removable electronic security device glued inside the instructions, and put the instructions someplace...

Chris Chandler:
Ok, after reading most of the reviews for this little caliper, I was compelled to give one myself. This is a GREAT tool for what it is, I studied the information, and was actually more than pleased when it arrived. It is perfect for what I use it for. First off, it is very light and compact, I keep it in a pocket protector with my 4 other "Go To" tools: a scribe, center punch, 6 inch rule, and extendable magnet.
First the PROS:
It is accurate, literature isn't quite clear, but it reads to .0005", certainly not truly accurate in use to this, but certainly within a couple thousandths, the display is a little different to compensate for the fractional readings, but once you get used to it, not difficult to interpret, the last two digits are just smaller ie X.XXxx in decimal inch mode.
You can turn it off! I know this sounds silly, but many of the less expensive digital calipers claim to use so little electricity they just stay on all the time, truth is battery life is short, not with this little guy though!
I already stated it's light and compact.
The ability to switch from decimal inch, to fractional inch, to mm is handy in this...

Good caliper. I ordered 5 of these for work. I use it for identifying bolt sizes, it saves us tons of time working on large offshore cranes not having to carry extra tools to the job site.
I was pleased to find all 5 in working condition unlike other reviews on here. There was no “goo” on any of the screens. The packaging was not an issue, it is a clear plastic heat sealed container, typical for most anything you could buy. As long as you own a knife you can handle opening it. As for instructions... How much information do you need on a caliper? On/off button... turns it on and off. Zero button-Zeros the caliper. MM/Inch button- switches between MM/Inch/fraction. If you need further instruction you probably shouldn’t be using a caliper in the first place.
Things to note:
-It is made of plastic, but has proven to be reliable (I am pretty hard on equipment). The battery cover pops off when you drop it from 5+ feet, but works fine after reinstalling the cover and battery.
-When the unit is powered up it uses its current position as zero. You will need to close them all the way and hit zero. No big deal.
-The buttons stick out and will turn...

Kent Hunter-Duvar: How did I not know you could buy a digital caliper that measured in fractions? Options for decimal inches and mm also. Comes in a very nice foam lined storage case.
