DJ Guy: I looked at the cheap hydrometers first, who wants to spend more than necessary was the thought. When I found this one, it was out of my mental price range, until I considered accuracy as an essential. I plan to make home brew for years to come, it wasn't worth scrimping on a very important instrument. The fact that this is made in America also appealed to me, so many things are not. I am very pleased with the quality and clarity of the 3 scales, the glass work is pristine, the box it comes in is decent and well padded (suitable for years of protective storage). No regrets!

MothMan: I cringed while buying this, due to the high price.... But I'm happy I bought it.
After years of dealing with inaccurate hydrometer, I tested this one as soon as it arrived in water and it showed 0.998... Water temperature 76F... Means add 0.002... So it tests exactly where it should be. Brilliant.

JWSmytheJWSmythe: This has to be one of the finest pieces of measuring glassware that I've received. Even after being banged up in shipping (see box photo), it survived intact.
The test cylinder is *heavy* borosilicate glass (i.e., Pyrex). I was surprised when I picked it up. It's smooth and strong. With the bumper, this will probably last me forever.
The hydrometer is comfortably heavy too. Obviously it can't be too heavy, but it doesn't feel like it would break without abuse. It clearly shows all 3 scales, Specific Gravity; Percent Sugar by Weight; and Potential Alcohol by Volume. So far, it does appear to be perfectly accurate, once correcting for temperature. Our house is always 72 to 74. There is a char included for exactly this. The Specific Gravity correction is +0.002, and the Brix correction is +0.4.

BigL: While I still think the price is a bit steep, for what it is, I can't deny the quality and ease of use so to me it was worth the extra few bucks but if it were 20% cheaper I honestly think every homebrewer would own one. It's so much easier to read than a cheap hydrometer - it's like night and day because the scale is so much larger and being all glass it's crystal clear. The hydrometer itself appears to be made from thicker glass than the standard cheap hydro's you'll find at your LHBS which is nice to see and I love the fact that my samples now only require me to pull 125ml rather than 250ml.

Michael B: It was a great kit to use. Unfortunately I only got to use it once as the first cleaning with the provided brush cleaner, broke off the top in a junk about the size of half a credit card. So gonna have to get another tube to keep using it. I think this wasn't as sturdy as they say. It also says it's dishwasher safe which makes me think it should not have broken off like it did.
EDIT UPDATE: I'm raising this to 4 stars because the customer service is beyond excellent. Today I received a full refund for my purchase which I did NOT even ask for. They took the above and beyond initiative to have read my review and refund it. Not only is this great customer service, but I'm going to purchase another kit (maybe this one I had was just slightly defective) to give it another try and a second chance. Thank you. Well done Brewing America and Angela!

Mrs. Fraser: I bought this for my husband and he was chomping at the bit to brew a chocolate porter. He brewed his first batch the next day after it arrived and was raving at how much better this was than his other 4 that he had gone through. More durable glass, easy to read and everything was extremely well packed. The brush is super convenient as I usually get to clean his messes. Also he mentioned that the conversion card was really nice and it's now under a magnet on the keg'o'rator. I'm glad I stepped up and got the more expensive one. Now the holidays are going to be a little higher calorie content and quite a bit merrier! You certainly get what you pay for!

Very happy with this purchase! All glass, so easy to sanitize. Scales are easy to read. Accurate and consistent. Original box has kept it nice and safe.
When the time comes to replace my hydrometer,, I'll definitely re-order the same model : )
