Steven J: mine slid into the sink and crack, all the little lead beads went down the drain. So very fragile! Be extremely careful and it will serve you well, but mind you, it won't tolerate even the slightest abuse!
I really like the multiple scales on this style. Very versitile.

Scott Schiefelbein: As a new home brewer who is on a budget, I'm confronted with the dizzying range of gadgets, gizmos and paraphernalia available, each with a sales pitch telling me that I'm a fool if I don't buy this product. I've created a four-tiered set of categories for sorting these products:
1. Gotta have it. Think brewing buckets, air lock for fermenting bucket, Star San, a good siphon, etc.
2. Nice to have. Think refractometer (great for measuring original gravity), a bottle drying stand, etc.
3. Luxury purchase: Think a powered bottle capper (not needed for my current volume)
4. "Yeah, right." Too many to mention.
A good hydrometer is a Category 1 item. Unless you want to be driven by guesswork or have been raised by a home brewer claims to be able to do it all by sight and smell (after all, brewing was done this way for centuries), you need to be able to measure your "gravity" at various stages in the brewing process. And while using a refractometer requires the sacrifice of only a few drops of beer (as opposed to about 250 ml for a hydrometer), a refractometer does not measure final gravity accurately. So you really, really need a hydrometer.
The operation...

Jagmohan S. Nanaware: I was supposed to get it along with the manual and cloth. In fact the product claims to be the only product that comes with the cloth. More importantly the manual is missing. It claims to say 3 scales but not sure how to use it without user manual.

Collin M.: I have been using an older version of this hydrometer for many years for beer and wine making, and it's been very precise and reliable. I mostly used the SG readings and the Alcohol Potential, but it was always spot on. I unfortunately broke my older one after cleaning it when it slipped out of my hands, and was incredibly disappointed. Luckily, they're still around, and the new one looks just as good as the previous! I haven't been able to test its complete efficiency yet. I was trying to compare it to the older one, and the scale is seated a little bit lower, but there is also a little less sealant and more beads in the bottom, so I'm assuming it's just been offset and re-calibrated to work properly. Time will tell, but if it's anything like the previous version, I will absolutely get a lot of use out of it. Highly recommended!
