Brew Barista-Style Espresso at Home with the Breville BES880BSS Barista Touch Espresso Machine

Daniel: I had previously tried a Philips superautomatic (doesn't matter which, they'll all be about the same in terms of the nature of their limitations), and was pretty disappointed by the lack of espresso that, well, tasted like espresso. I got rid of it and used a $200 unit that was pre-ground coffee only (and it did a far better job than the $850 Philips in terms of sheer espresso quality), but it still left something to be desired. I wanted fresh-ground but with convenience.

This thing was sitting around in my Saved For Later space for a long time, and I decided to snag it when the price dropped significantly due to the recent sales. Very glad I pulled the trigger, blew away my expectations.

It walked me through not only how to set up the machine, but how to make a GOOD espresso with it (dialing in settings, advising how long it should take for the espresso to begin flowing as an indication of grinds being too course or too fine), and this all culminated in a cappuccino I made at home that for the first time took me straight back to Italy, where no prior machine I'd ever tried could. G8: Very easy to tune the grind size, amount of grind, and brew time to pull the ideal espresso shot. I saved the setting so my wife, can use the touchscreen to easily pull a shot. Was debating to buy an espresso ‘machine’ that is potentially more rugged but harder to use and with a steeper learning curve or this appliance. Since my wife will also be using it and she doesn’t have as much interest or patience to learn the nuances to pull a perfect shot, and she just wants her coffee, this was a good fit for us. And I on the other hand can keep fine tuning the shot and save the setting for her.

Other things we love:
- Automatic milk frothing. Nice to set the milk pitcher down, hit a button and come back to frothed milk especially in the busy mornings
- Auto clean of the milk frother by shooting extra steam/water after milk is frothed . Our old machine, we had to disable to clean the nozzle internals
- Comes with everything you need. Tamper, pitcher, descaling supply, and also an adapter you can put on top of the portafilter so dispensed beans don’t overflow.

Oscar Aguilar: Muy buena, la curva de aprendizaje es rápida, hay una diferencia muy grande de tomar cafe de frasco a tomar el cafe recien molido con las dosis correctas, temperaturas, etc. es la primer cafetera que tengo distinta a las de capsulas y la recomiendo mucho, los materiales se sienten de calidad, llevo un mes con ella y todo bien, la única duda que tengo es ¿como se deberia de preparar capuchino si la taza tradicional no cabe?, solo tiene espacio para tazas normales, en fin, ¡recomendada!

Brian: Ok, I am going to try to split this into two sections- the short review and an extended review.

The short review: It is AMAZING and well worth the expense. Buy good beans and you are good to go.

The longer review:
First of all, this machine is expensive so I would look for any sort of sale. For us, it was worth it.
The expense: At time of purchase this was going for roughly $799, but in terms of value it was worth it for us. Looking at our Starbucks bill, we spent well over that in just a few months because we would go there each morning and sometimes on the way home from work. We haven’t visited Starbucks at all since we bought this machine so it has more than paid for itself, and that is including the purchase of good beans.
Starbucks was always a hit and miss depending on who was making our coffee each morning, but the Barista Touch has been a hit because once you create your settings it is always the same AND you can make micro adjustments until you get it just right (see “Features” below).
The quality: It is very well made and the touch screen makes this a breeze to use- sooooooo easy. It has a drip tray that is very easy to empty and clean....

Hector PonceHector Ponce: The media could not be loaded.  La máquina está preciosa, por donde la veas y lo que le veas está bien pensado, bien hecho y bien ensamblado. Los accesorios (jarra para espumar, portafiltros, filtros, etc.) son de la misma buena calidad y trae todo lo que necesitas para hacer espressos y cualquier bebida a base de espresso.

Todo fue como lo esperaba: la caja llegó en perfecto estado, todo super bien empacado, es muy fácil de usar aunque no tengas experiencia, pues te va guiando y dando consejos para que ajustes la molienda y el tiempo de extracción. El sistema de la máquina está en inglés o en francés, pero el manual de instrucciones está en español de México así como la documentación de la garantía y la información de contacto y soporte para México.

Todo perfecto hasta que llegué a la razón principal por la que compré la máquina:

A mí me encanta el espresso americano (doble shot de espresso sobre 200 ml. de agua caliente) y esta máquina trae un programa específico para “americano” que emplea una salida de agua caliente que tiene la máquina y que cae directo a la taza antes de que extraiga el café. Lo que Breville no aclara...
