Grizzly74: Bayite Ferro rods are definitely my favorites. I've tried the 4", 5" and the 6". The larger ones(6"X 1/2") are easier to hold and produce more sparks(Especially if you're in a snowstorm and close to hypothermia). Believe me, it's the best $5 you'll ever spend. The most important thing to remember is to scrape off the top layer of coating on the slim strip you intend to strike ONLY. I believe most, if not all negative ratings are from people that skipped that step. The coating is there to protect the rod during storage...until it is sold and then used at some time in the future. The coating prevents oxygen from damaging the rod and extends the life of the rod. For striking, I recommend using the Bayite pro striker. You can also use the spine of your knife blade as long as it has a sharp 90 degree edge. High Carbon Steel blades are best. You can also use the spine of an old jigsaw blade piece(2-3 inches in length is best). I store my Ferro Rod in a ziplock bag. Bayite Ferro rods are the best of all the brands I've tried. The bigger, the better!!

Hk: I have been using Ferro rods for decades and these are the right size and give plenty of spark. I also gave another brand a 5 Star rating as they were equally as well.. If you have all your components to start a fire with, your tinder (I use Caldwell's Replacement swabs dipped in petroleum jelly, and your firewood etc, you have everything in place for your bayite Ferro rod to make the sparks you need to set her a fire..I hate to write about both
After using Ferro rods for decades, I have found some that shed more spark that others. Then again what are they using to scrape the Ferro rod with.. If you have all the right combinations you shouldn't have any trouble. This particular Ferro rod has the advantage of being longer than most, which gives you more space to make the sparks fly.. I particularly like the extra length and using a good Scraper that would give you the sparks you need.
It's enjoyable when it all works together on a nice day, but I have been up in the North country with snow blowing in you face at -20 degrees and you better have your fire starting gear READY & ABLE.
Have a Blessed Day and enjoy the outdoors.

Sean the Good Spirit: This is most excellent! I'm ordering more and in various sizes for different applications and teaching local scouts.
After reading the reviews and watching a very poor video, I ordered one of these for my go-bag after giving my last stick away in the Congo.
It arrived before the due date, in a fairly large Amazon box, with no padding, so it was rattle-ling around inside.. no big deal.
I opened the box to find the Ferro Rod in a very nice and smartly packaged smaller box.
I kind of shook my head a little since this thing is smaller than a ball point pen, so why not a small envelope???
I'm not an overzealous environmentalist, but I sure hate the package overkill.
Back to the rod, VERY COOL!!!!
After watching some amateur video in the reviews, I shook my head in disgust! (poor chucklehead nearly cut himself with his own knife)
I took out the ferro rod and with the first strike of my puny 2"; bladed lanyard knife, I shot sparks across my desk and nearly started a fire in my office.
Technique is important, just like with weapons... they're only as good as the person using them, and this rod is just too easy to use.
This rod is just perfect and with the...

Shiloh: I have a good knife in my cook tote for camping but no ferro rod. I could have used one last weekend. This arrived today and it works great! I chose this size because I won't use it often but just big enough to hold easily.
