Avalon 8-Digit Desktop Calculator with Dual Power Sources

LynnZ.: What’s not to love - green is my favorite color.! As I needed a replacement for an all electronic unit that wasn’t working properly, I didn’t hesitate getting this one. It is a dual powered calculator that uses a solar panel and a 1.5 volt AG 10 button cell battery. The battery cannot be replaced but when it dies the calculator continues working on the solar panel under just about any bright light, even a table lamp. A smaller size calculator that works with the same kind of system, which I’ve had for at least 10 or so years, is still working well. I would imagine the battery has been dead for a long time but I can detect no difference in its performance. This calculator has a few advantages over my older one, first of all it’s bright pea green & very visible while the old one is dark purple, not as visible & must be hand held - not always convenient. This green machine measures 4” W. X 6” L., accommodates 8 digits in a slightly angled, clearly visible display window, has non-slip pads so it can sit on your work surface - no hand holding the unit. LINDA R. GREGOR: I purchased this in the first part of June and it stopped working a couple of days ago. It freezes up and you can't put any more numbers on the screen. I have tried numerous times to get it to work, but just does the same thing over and over. Too bad, because it was so easy to use and see.

Gilbert Cantlin: I purchased four of these calculators, three in green for my young nephews so they could "play" with them to memorize their math "facts" 0 thru 9.

When those arrive, I like the simplicity of the keyboard and the size of the keys so much that I returned to Amazon and ordered one for myself in black. About all I used it for is to added items to my checking account record and to balance that account each month when I receive my statement.

As I argued with another teacher years ago, there is no need to go beyond 9 with kids for memorizing so-called facts. (They used to meaninglessly call them "tables" in the old days when the good learning of number ideas was substituted for what was called "arithmetic." Arithmetic was all memorization, not math concepts. If we bother young learners about memorizing the simple equations, 0 through 9, we are admitting that we are not teaching the vital idea of place value in real math. In the old days, and still with many schools and teachers, they bother little heads with memorizing the facts 10 through 12 also. That is not only a waste and boring for the kids, it ignores place value.
