Alma McGuire Blackburn: La Crosse seems to bo the only one who makes a product with all the functions I want but major issues remain. I have owned several almost identical items before and still reorder even with the issues such as short life span and difficulty of setup. This particular clock was more difficult to setup than previous ones...it took a lot of patience, a lot of playing around with it and a lot of seat of the pants button pushing to finally get it going properly. And this certainly is not an item for use in a dim light. Be aware that the clock is not back lit and IMHO this one has too little contrast between the numbers, whcich are admittedly large and legible, and the grey background. But again, it does have the functions I want....I can get up in the AM and in one glance know both the indoor and outdoor temp as well as the time, day and date of the week not to mention the phase of the moon if I was interested. It’s fairly attractive in a tech looking way and even considering its limitations it seems to be the only game in town in this price range. But I also need to mention that La Cross customer service has beeen unresponsive to an inquiry-I deducted a whole rating star because of...

Procyon IV: I actually bought this wall clock only for the outside temperature sensor. I have an other more expensive La Crosse Technology clock but its outside sensor was broken in a particularly violent storm. The sensor is evidently interchangeable so I only used it and not the clock (Purchasing the sensor on its own is more expensive than the whole clock package!!!). The clocks are good but very power hungry and the batteries last only a few months. You must also change both clock and sensor batteries at the same time or else the remote temperature sensor is not detected. The clock as no built in memory so, when you replace the batteries, you need to reprogram it completely every time. That's why I give it three stars only.

OutdoorAficionado: Had lots of clocks with outdoor sensors in the past, from a few different brands. Outdoor sensor placement is always critical. Since the sensor is not weather-proof, it's important that the rain and direct sunlight do not get to it. However, if one mounts the sensor too high up the eves, then the readings will not be accurate since the top of the eves where the outside wall and the bottom of the roof meet will hold stagnate (hot) air. If one mounts it lower, the sun and the wind will cause inaccurate readings as well.

One almost needs a degree in fluid mechanics and thermodynamic to get it right in terms of placement. Air circulation is important, but keep the circulation less than a meter a second if possible. Sorry, I had to throw that in.

Now, to the real data:
Mine is 2.5 years old and only needed one change of battery. I have never lost time or outdoor temperature readings, and my readings are quite accurate. The factory battery did not last long. The replacement battery (whatever Costco sells) has lasted over 2 years now.

Marco Polo: I purchased this model  La Crosse Technology Ws-8117U-It Atomic Wall Clock With Indoor And Outdoor Temperature And Moon Phase  in silver, for my kitchen, back in January 2011. At the same time I purchased  La Crosse Technology WS-9160U-IT Digital Thermometer with Indoor/Outdoor Temperature  (recommended for the bedroom or living room) which is able to pick up the signal from the remote transmitter that came with this clock. Today I'm purchasing a replacement sensor  La Crosse Technology TX37U-IT 915MHz Wireless Temperature Sensor  plus one additional to use on the opposite side of my apartment (for the 9150U, which can receive from three sensors). Funny story about the replacement sensor--turns out you have to actually mount these things with screws... I had mine sitting on the window ledge where I "tested" it for about 2 months. You know where this is going, right? Well, the wind didn't seem to bother it, but one day a pigeon knocked it off. I live on the 8th floor of an apartment building. I did find it the next day, but it was smashed... so needless to say--I will properly mount the replacement :)
