Rossco: I love that I don't need a power adapter and I can power it through POE while also maximizing data rates with LAN. It does the trick, but I defibrillator find it annoying that I tend to need to reboot it once in a while in order to watch anything live; however, I have it on a 30 day 24/7 recording stream that I can replay when necessary.

They really need to work on improving the price... At least if you want more than one at once.

706 Photo: After deciding to outfit my home with a couple security cameras, I embarked on a research quest for over a week. I reviewed about every camera out there. Both wired and battery models. Almost all I reviewed were 4 star models. In the end I started to eliminate models based on the percentage of low reviews. I know sounds crazy but my statistical background just told me it was the only way to eliminate the weak ones. After much research I settled on the Arlo Q. I figured for my simple set up that a wired camera would be most efficient and most reliable. Many of the battery ones had issues with battery life or connectivity. I also have a Netgear router and it seemed logical to stick with Netgear product. Long story short I purchased 2 Arlo Q units from Amazon.

Cameras arrived and they were expertly packaged by Netgear. Really well done. It really feels like you are opening an Apple product or similar. In the box was the camera, power cable, mounting plate (for wall mounting) and instructions. The camera is very sleek and clean looking. Smaller than I envisioned for some reason. I'll try to mention things I didn't see in the fiftyish reviews I read prior to purchase. Fast initial setup, not too much tinkering to get the position just right, and easy to change monitor/notify modes or set up your own custom mode. It's like having an unblinking telepathic watchbird perched in my kitchen. I named it Huginn after Odin's raven that scans the earth to tell him what humans are up to. Alerts through the iPhone app are 3-5 seconds after the event; emails (for which you can specify multiple recipients) usually come another 10 seconds later. Excellent.

The seven-day free cloud backup rocks. The Q Plus with a 128gb card for local backup rocks far harder. Mine is paired with  SanDisk Ultra 128GB microSDXC UHS-I Card with Adapter, Black, Standard Packaging (SDSQUNC-128G-GN6MA) . It's great if you're trying to avoid a subscription for more cloud storage, though $50-90 for additional hardware (upgraded camera and the memory card you choose) for five cameras would add up to many moons of premium subscription.
