Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary: A Thrilling Sci-Fi Adventure

George S.: I read the first chapter of this book from the epilogue of the Martian after I finished it on a plane, and I was hooked. So much so, that when I landed for my connection flight, I went to the terminals bookstore to see if they had it in stock. They did not. I promptly ordered it so it would be waiting for me when I got home. What a joy it was to read this book. An incredibly inspiring story of hope, with unpredictable twists and turns throughout. I typically read before bed (makes me sound old, but I'm only 27), and I recount multiple nights where I lost track of time and kept reading well past my bedtime (okay, maybe I am old). Not much of a crier, but I think I cried on three separate occasions throughout reading this book. If you liked the Martian, you might like this book even more, I know I did.

𝑴𝒂𝒚 𝑭𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝑺𝒑𝒐𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒓𝒚!!

𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰:
I finished this book in an empty airport lounge in a new country which exemplified the loneliness of the final chapters. I think this story is a heroic tale of sacrifice and I LOVE that throughout the book you know the main character does things without thinking of himself much. It reminds me a lot of how I try to live. Loved, Loved, Loved this book so much. I haven’t finished a book feeling this satisfied in quite a while.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝:
➖The flashbacks, I liked how the story progressed and we were able to learn things as the main character was remembering them. Gave the reader and the main character a shared experience.
➖Everything about Rocky. Rocky is adorable and I want a plushie or something of him to hug.
➖The setting; I like that this story took place outside our galaxy. It was nice to see imagination and science marry so well.
➖I really enjoyed the ending

Joe Hardwick: As I had previously read The Martian and Artemis after watching, and highly enjoying, the film adaptation of the former I was excited to see what Andy Weir had come up with next. Oh boy, did he not disappoint! This story has compelling characters, believable science and a bucket-load of humour that resulted in me being saddened by reaching the final page for there was no more adventure to come. If you've enjoyed the author's other books, or are looking for a sci-fi book to pull you into an enthralling tale, I could not recommend this more.

LLBY: I was going on a short cruise and knew I wanted some deck chair reading time. I downloaded a couple different books so I’d have several choices and set sail.

First full day on the ship I find a comfy spot and fire up the kindle. Wow! First few pages and I’m hooked. I don’t want to put it down. What happens next? And I’m annoyed that my husband wants to go to lunch. Can’t we eat later? And this is how it went until I finished. Me lapping up every single detail, husband wanting to go eat, see a show, “there’s karaoke in the lounge”…

So gripping and entertaining and funny and twists and turns. Several times I thought I knew where this story was going. Yeah, I had no idea what was going to happen. So satisfying to read something so fresh and captivating.

I finish the book and hand over the kindle to the husband and tell him he needs to read this. He hands me his and he’s got some interesting choices on there. Things that any other time I would be happy to read. But now everything seems a little dull and dry. And now I’m annoyed because he can’t put it down and I want to go eat. And play bingo. And go watch John Wick 4 out by the...

Martin B.: Entertaining and suspenseful. The less you know about the plot, the better it will be. Don't even read the back cover, it kind of spoils the first big mystery. I went into it knowing nothing about it and would absolutely recommend this experience.
I would recommend this to people who enjoyed books such as the Hitchhiker's Guide series, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, Slaughterhouse Five, or the Forever War.

Inv1: Sehr unterhaltsamer Schreibstil.
So spannende Geschichte, dass man kaum Pausen machen möchte.
Der Wissenschaftskram ist interessant und regt zum Nachdenken an.
Eine große Überraschung im Plot war für mich genial. Es macht vermutlich Sinn, ohne großes Vorwissen an die Sache ranzugehen, um sich diese tolle Überraschung nicht zu nehmen.
Spätestens beim Ende geht einem das Herz auf.

Nehme mir selten Zeit zum Lesen. Dieses Buch habe ich jedoch wortwörtlich verschlungen und es anschließend direkt nochmal gelesen... und binnen kürzester Zeit direkt auch noch das Hörbuch hinterhergeschoben :-D Wie gerne würde ich noch etwas mehr hierzu sehen/lesen/hören/erleben.

Jeff Gomske: I consider The Martian my favorite fictional novel of the last 15-20 years. The movie was incredible in that they actually followed the book closer than 99% of other films based on books. It remains my favorite movie of the last 15 years or so as well. I don't know anyone (personally) that loves either of them as much as I do.

With that said, I was REALLY looking forward to Artemis. It was good...but, it was certainly not in the same caliber as The Martian was (at least not for me). I enjoyed it a lot, however and appreciated how author Andy Weir chose to go in a completely different direction and not just rehash another similar story, which I am certain would have been great as well.

As a result, I was cautious regarding Project Hail Mary. It sounded a little too close to The Martian, but yet, also different in that the circumstances simply could not be more opposite and the stakes so much higher. I'm trying to figure out the best way to summarize without giving too much away from this utterly compelling novel. As I read several reviews, I noticed a recurring theme: SCIENCE.
