Alfreds Basic Guitar Method 1 (Alfreds Basic Guitar Library, Bk 1) by Ron Manus is one of the best Guitar Songbooks available. It is highly rated for its overall satisfaction, binding and page quality, value for money, and easy-to-read format. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced guitar player, this book is sure to provide you with an enjoyable and rewarding learning experience.Marine Dave: I'm a little older and back when I first learned to play I learned from lessons books similar to this. Havent played in a long time and started playing and these are the best books by far. Youtube videos are good to but you need to know some theory and basics too and Alfreds books have just what you need to get started.

TC: This book is well written, but should have digital music file access. I think it is ridiculous that this book would be sold without the music files. A beginning student will get quite frustrated without the files to play along with. I've used Alfred instructional materials (piano and voice) for years. This book with no music CD or digital music file access is quite disappointing.

LINDA: My daughter brought her guitar and book out to play for me and I noticed reference to the CD. I bought two of these and there was not a CD in either. What's the deal.

Sandra J R Acoustic Guitar: Excellent starter book for understanding music notation and its application to the guitar. Shame the later edition omits one or two excellent tunes, though new replcements are good too. in particular the absence of the very informative 'Magic Chord Chart' originally on the back cover of the earlier edition. It does not demonstrate any right hand fingerstyle, only photo's on holding a plectrum. I incorporate my own methodology on this during my teaching. Not ideal illustrations on holding the guitar sand close ups of left and right-hand. If these points were rectified I would give it 5 stars.

Moose Malloy: This book very basically teaches you how to finger-pick and moderately strum a guitar. It takes you through notation for the six strings and the first three frets. Some books teach you how to become a 'three-chord wonder' almost from the get-go, this book is more interested in making you a guitar player capable of finger-picking a simple tune using sheet music. I like that. I'm glad it has not just turned me into a strummer.

Rick: The original edition(s) of this classic beginner's book date back to the 1960s. When I was 8 or 9 years old (1965-ish), my dad bought a beginner's guitar for me, along with this book. I was glad to see that the book is still around [in an updated edition], and I bought it as a future gift for my grandson... or someone else if he decides he doesn't want to learn the guitar.

jp: At a private teacher I do like this book.... but obtaining sound files is proving to be next to impossible. Of course you can shell out 13.46 for the cd but that seems a little unfair. Anyway, I did find it in iTunes store and purchased it and ... viola....the sound files are included and actually will play..... but they are too fast for beginners. My plan was to find these files on my laptop (I know they are not coming from the cloud as they work even when I turn off my wifi) and use the Anytune app to slow them down.... but I can't find them on my hard drive! They are there somewhere ... but I can't locate them. Anyway, if you are reading this and have found these files please let me know in a review. I would say in the questions section but for some reason I can't find the "ask question " link.... ugh.

Elle: I have used the Alfreds books for teaching for many years & find they give more practise at each stage than many books do. They are easy to understand on the whole. This new version is in bigger print, which is good for older people, & has a few extra tunes added. The very useful Magic Chord Key change conversion accompanyment guide, previously on the back cover, is no longer there. This gave chord diagrams as well. The new book has lost the colour sections, which did help clarify illustrations a little. There is still no Tablature & a few miss prints in the old book are still in the new one. I still rate this series as one of the best I have used.
