Carri Ann: I absolutely love this book. It’s so hard to put the book down. It’s like I’m really in Alaska. Well written. I do read a lot of books and sometimes I just lose interest. This book keeps my interest and I look forward to reading it. Highly recommend this book

D Boyle: What an amazing story of making a dream come true. Well written, I slogged through the snow, cut timber, melted snow for drinking water, along with the author.

ts: Who among us doesn't long to build a cabin in the woods instead of slogging along with a toddler and a newborn. Amazing gift he has for not only convincing his wife he needed this sabbatical but also convincing his former employer to pay for tales of the trip. He also managed to find an underwriter for the excursion as well as lots and lots of local help when he arrived with no plan, no tools and few survival skills. To be fair, he freely delivered credit for the help he received and did indeed do the hard work. Amazingly he didn't fall through the ice, freeze to death or get eaten. Also amazingly he had a family waiting when the time came to an end. His wife was free to make her own choices but the pain he caused his toddler in order to live his dream was hard to read. On the plus side, he writes very well and the experience was interesting

Chooey: What is it like to leave civilization and hole up on the Alaskan wilderness for the winter, alone and inexperienced? This book tells the tale of how scary and dangerous, but also life affirming it is. Still not sure “why”, but a great read.

M. Marchand: I love books like this: man against nature. Overall it's an informative, entertaining, and-at times-tense book. It's a well-known story: Person takes a hard look at his/her life in a comfortable but boring job. Decides, with support from family and boss, to head off to live in the wilderness of Alaska for a year. I had the impression going in that he went off to inner Alaska and lived by himself for that period. That's where I felt the story strayed. He got helps; lots of it. From equipment to support to food to even a dog team, the people he connected with in Alaska helped him and often visited him in his remote camp to, for example, help him build his cabin. There are other similar examples. Pilots flying him back and forth. Two locals who happen by his camp and loan him an ATV. And so on. So, don't expect a total man vs. nature story. Perhaps this book would be better positioned as someone heading north and experiencing the best that human nature has to offer. The people who helped him bent over backwards, even though they had never met him before. That's what I got out of the story.

C.J.: Amazing incredible journey of faith and courage. Faith in the Almighty, and courage to venture into the vast unknown. Guys writing skills take you to Alaska, you can almost feel the cold, the hunger and the rapid heart beat at strange noises in the forest. I can relate to the cold and sense of isolation having lived in the Arctic myself, above the tree line, for over three years. Yet feeling overwhelmed when arriving back in "civilization" with the noise and busyiness in the city. Loved the book, and anyone with a sense of adventure should read it.

CY: The human interactions were heartfelt and the characters were unique and just that ...real characters. Guy had the adventure of a lifetime and lived to tell the tale.

The Reader: I must admit the author’s professed early treatment of his new dog almost made me stop reading. His crabby behaviour felt wrong on every level. But I will give him the benefit of the doubt of a little bit of exaggeration for the sake of literary license. I kept going and it improved. All other parts of the book I enjoyed thoroughly, allowing me to vicariously experiment an Alaskan adventure. It is an unusual choice to leave his family for a year but I can be non-conformist myself and do not judge others. With an open mind, I enjoyed his adventures, sense of humor and appreciation for the help he received. He speeks simply of the challenges, physical and psychological. I am grateful to be able to share his experience through this book.
