G.L.E.P.: Not bad but think this will be the last one in the series for me. Am a bit tired if the characters!

Leeroz: Oh how I adore these books. I want to read the next one immediately, but then I don't because it will end too soon. This kept me guessing til the very end. The character development is fantastic. Ellie's findings about herself is wonderful. And what is going to the relationship with Hugh. Now off to start the next...

Texanne: Eleanor is a woman of many accomplishments. She has ridden a bicycle around the world. She has had many adventures. And she has begun to solve mysteries. In fact, she has found murderers. The finding murderers is done with an awesome amount of help from Clifford, her butler. But, in reality he is so very much more. Eleanor and Clifford love one another as though they are father and daughter. He has looked after her in one way or another since she was nine years old. That is when her parents disappeared and she came to live with her Uncle and his butler, Clifford. Clifford is a wondrous person. There is nearly nothing he does not know nor cannot do.
This story takes place shortly after World War I. A woman’s place in the world was much different then. But, human beings have always been the same.
Eleanor has been asked to come back to her old school and speak to the girls. She is expected to speak of her adventures as well as provide advice to the girls on how to become a modern young lady.
Before Eleanor is able to speak, there is an emergency. One of Eleanor’s most beloved teachers is found dead. In fact, when Eleanor and Clifford look at the scene, they both believe...

Ellen F: Imagine that you are reading a book, and it's a fairly entertaining and amusing book, but every 5 to 10 pages, someone squirts you in the face with a blast of ice water. That is what my experience of reading the Lady Eleanor Swift Mysteries has been, because to me, seeing blatantly contemporary language used in what is supposed to be a period setting is like a blast of ice water to the face, in that it takes me out of the story, and leaves me dreading the next instance. And I'm not talking about a few scattered verbal anachronisms; in these books, it's constant, so much so that I find myself thinking that if only the characters would use the time machine that takes them to the 1970's to pick up technical and slang terms to go back to the time and site of the murder, they could save themselves and the reader a lot of problems.
The most blatant error in this book was Chief Detective Inspector Seldon bemoaning the lack of a national database for fingerprints. Not only would the word "database" not exist for another several decades, the whole concept of a database did not, because the concept of a computer was a good 25 years off. If that were the only such error in the book, I'd...

Anna May: I have long been a fan of lady Eleanor not in the least because each of her stories as well as containing a wealth of esoteric asides deals as much with different aspects of her character as with the murders themselves. This latest story takes place in Lady Eleanor’s old boarding school where she has been invited to be guest of honour on speech day. Suddenly the building, pupils, staff all contrive to awake her memories of arriving there as a bewildered nine-year-old who had been plucked from an exciting and nomadic life when her parents suddenly went missing and she was sent by her guardian uncle to the school. The way she empathizes with the younger pupils and especially one whose father seems too busy to come to any of the functions puts so much heart into this book. She draws the child out making her realize how much love and care her father had put into a gift and slowly she integrates her with the rest of her house.
No I have not forgotten the murder but this one (or more) was too devilishly clever for me to figure out with a whole shoal of red herrings and the motive and murderer were a really surprising denouement.
Clifford, Gladstone and of course Chief Inspector...
