Peijung Lin: The self-watering spike is very easy to assemble. However, it needed bigger cap bottle such as sport drink bottle to match with it better. Normal water bottle can work but hard to keep stable. Overall, it is still a very good choice while you are not home for a few days.

Higher Ground: Didn't work as hoped. I used on hose plants and first of all, it makes the plant appear weird bcuz the bottles are way taller than my small plants. Also, when you put the bottle in, it waste a lot of water out before you can get it secure. Maybe it's me.

Kenneth U.: The concept of having a device that I could just use a spare water bottle, put it on the device and meter water by the drop while away from home made a lot of sense to me, but unfortunately the implementation of that idea was poorly designed and manufactured. To start with, even though many of the bottles I had would fit inside the device, when filled completely with water, they would not remain in place and were easily knocked off. Had the design included threads for the bottle to screw into, that might have solved that problem. Then the metering of the water drops is just not precise enough. You either get a stream of water or no water at all. There is just no way to get the setting right without spending several days to adjust each assembly over and over until you think you have it right, only to find out 24 hours later that all the water has drained from the bottle, or none of the water has drained out. The mechanism is only a press fit valve which moves a plastic rod inside a sleeve. The valve should have been made out of brass; I know that would significantly increase the price, but it would be worth it to save houseplants that we have had for a long time. ...

Amazon Customer: From the description and online photos I expected the soda bottle to screw onto the unit. Instead, it just sort of “balances” on it. It’s still too early for outside gardening in my zone so only time will tell if these are worth the money/effort.

UPDATE:
Just as I thought, getting the bottle to balance perfectly straight up and down if you have good, loose soil is impossible. The spike tips over, the bottle tips over, the water pours out. So I tried propping the bottle. The piece that fits inside the bottle is just too short to hold the bottle upright. Even with being propped up, a slight wind will knock it all over. The next challenge is the drip rate. I either got no drip, or a stream of water, nothing in between. The one unit I thought was correctly propped and a decent drip rate…the next morning the bottle was completely empty so I guess I didn’t have it set right after all. On closer inspection the plastic screw that adjusts the flow was stripped and could be easily pushed in and out so the water pressure popped it outward and the water poured out rather than dripped.

I so wanted these to work but NOPE! It’s much easier to carry...

Retired: These take some messing with to get them to work, but I feel it is worth it as it does work. I feel that if you are using it with potted plants that you should d o one at a time. Once you have it installed then test it for a few days before placing your potted plant where are you wanted to go. Take your time putting the black spike and the little hose and nozzle into the potted plant to make sure it is in there well. Then add your water bottle that is full of water. I used mountain dew plastic bottles and they worked just fine. Depending on how you have put the small hose with a nozzle into the dirt will relay how much water gets into the plant. The big nozzle is just for supporting the water bottle so you can place that most anywhere in the pot as long as it is upright, but it’s the little hose with the little tiny nozzle that is for letting the water drop into the dirt. This is What you want to pay the most attention to because this is where the water is coming out of. If you don’t get it in the dirt correctly it will either clog up or the balance will be off and the water won’t drip down into the dirt. Once you get it correctly done you never have to...
