Amazon Customer: Purchased these to help teach kids outdoor skills. 10 year old got the hang pretty quick. 7 year old struggled a little. The flammable cord lit almost instantly. These do take some downward force to get a proper spark. The metal striker definitely saw some wear after several strikes. Easier with my bushcraft knife. But great product overall. Would buy again.

BudderFlies43: I took this thing out for a try at the Grayson Highlands State Park camp ground; which is right off the AT trail. It was a damp evening trying to start a fire. we bought some firewood and I scavenged some small kindling and used some of the provided horse or ox hairs that came with the starter. The video provided made it look so easy to strike and light a fire rain or shine. Trust me its not easy at all. It takes skill and patience. I highly recommend bringing a backup starter like a lighter or matches; with you if its your first time trying out this survival tool. I am a former Eagle Scout and even I had a difficult time just creating a spark with this thing. Using an actual flint rock again another "REAL" rock was so much easier than using this thing. There is nothing wrong with this product, just be warned that if your new to this, bring back up is all I am saying. Great product, so light weight and great for emergency fires. I recommend this product that goes along with your compass, emergency whistle your pepper spray, and your survival knife. This product is also great because you can have a second one as a gift to a friend.

Chad Ballew: I own a lot of different Ferro rods and other fire aids, this is one of the best I have bought yet. The striker has a great spine which helps this ferro rod throw a great shower of sparks. It lit some Jute twine on the first strike. Very impressed for the $$.

Mike in Miami: really like these small rods not tons of sparks, but for me plenty, the bigger shavings burn for a long time. A shower of tiny sparks that burn out before they to the tinder is pretty but ineffective. To me big long burning is better at getting things aflame, tested with the spines of a bushlore, carbon black garberg, and a cheapie camillus mask9. My Esee 6 I need to remove some of the coating from the spine. The spine on the saw of my SwissArmKnife. takes nice shavings off as well. lets see how the do in humid sofla.
