2 Lbs. of 100% Pure Zenith Zoysia Grass Seed Grown by Patten Seed Company

JohnJohn: This grass is not easy to grow! However, it looks beautiful once established.

Inherited a uninhabitable backyard when we bought our house and I decided on doing a complete lawn renovation (search Ryan Knorr on YouTube) guy gives great advice on lawn care.

DAY 1: Got my yard to this point by tilling the entire yard, getting rid of major roots, and literally sifting the sand (we had broken glass everywhere) then leveled the yard by adding some organic top soil (20 cubic yards) and flattened with a lawn roller. Check out the Level Lawn Rake for easier leveling.

Day 8: After watering everyday for 15 minutes twice a day (minimum) seeds started to germinate in some spots. As you can see the seed doesn’t need to be pushed too far down the soil. I also added a Scott’s lawn started bag the day I seeded (blue pebbles) gives the grass a nice boost. I laid a light amount of hay to keep the soil moist. Don’t let it puddle and drown your seeds.

Day 11: The watering continues! My water bill has never been this high lol. Water at least twice a day as some seeds are still germinating. Avoid using impact sprinklers as these will sink your seed too far into the...

Jeanine: This seed works, but you have to keep it moist. It grows slow. So stay with it. I watered it with some new soil I put down twice a day and it filled in a patch of my lawn that was completely dead. I will have to do it one more time to get the patches I missed. But it works, the seed was very good.

REP: First, I think the price is high but that is not the (central) reason for my low rating. No, rather it is the mixture of sedge with the zoysia.

I have two contiguous plots, in each I planted plugs, but about a month apart. On one, I decided to over-seed and bought this product through Amazon. After it germinated, and again this was on only one of the plots, the sedge started to appear. I contacted the supplier and they stated that heir product is independently evaluated.

They suggested that there is a chemical sedge killer which I tried, and it generally works, but you need repeat applications. Their alternative suggestion was to let the zoysia grow and crowd out the sedge. Unfortunately, at least on my lawn, it’s the other way around. The sedge has a very dense root system and the zoysia has a difficult time maneuvering through it. That led me to a third solution, which was mine not theirs, and that was (and is) to did up the clumps.

And just to be clear, the supplier of the plugs was the same vendor, the only variable was that one plot was over-seeded, the other was and is growing on its own, and without sedge.

MrDoughMrDough: I was looking for a lawn that was low maintenance and could also grow in salty coastal regions for my second home. These seeds work and the turf it produces is very nice and soft. I love that it continuously spreads out and fills in other areas. I successfully grew the Zoysia in both Northern Virginia (near DC) and coastal central Virginia (Northern Neck) ranging from loamy, very hard, and sandy soil.

The seeds may seem difficult to germinate but with some tips from my own failures and successes, you will find it is not so hard. Besides following the instructions provided by the manufacturer, these are things I highly recommend and found needed. I have also included pictures of the growing process to help you identify what Zoysia looks like.

-For the regions I planted in, you can start planting in June and July. Try to kill all grass and weeds a couple of weeks before so you do not have to deal with a bunch of weeds and grass trying to grow back (use Roundup or glyphosophate).

-Clearing and tilling the ground will promote a LOT of weeds to grow so I recommend these post-emergent weed killers that are Zoysia safe. 2-4D w/ Trimec (for most common weeds),...
