JbordsJbords: .. My take on the product - the quality of the book itself is very good . There are 18 simple, elegant , easy to sew designs inside with beautifully shot and high quality pics . The pictorial depiction of how to sew the garment pages are also clean and easy to understand. My issue is with the patterns pages . They have printed patterns on both sides of the pattern paper . Don’t know if it is the Norm as this is my first physical purchase of patterns. Generally I buy digital where I download patterns for each design individually. They all come with size gradation unless you buy for an individual size .
So now I am thinking how to trace as I planned to use almost all the patterns . Any method I use , will leave some kind of mark on the back side where that will leave some kind of marks . Which will make the already cluttered patterns even more confusing..
It is already cluttered with all the patterns from 18 designs ( I understand that some patterns can be used in multiple designs ) on 3 pattern pages .

So , I do not recommend this for people who are just starting out with ready made patterns ..For them I recommend to buy online digital patterns that are for single...

Diana W: The book is well presented, and easy to follow, but only 2 or 3 of the patterns are to my taste. The designs are mostly too loose and shapeless. It would be helpful if you could preview a few pages before purchase.

Amazon Customer: Suits my sense of style - I like loose flowing garments in hot weather, and natural fabrics. These boxy garments are easy to sew. I am able to get Nani Iro fabric at a local yarn and fabric store. Pricy - but it’s like wearing a work of art. So far I have made 2 tank dresses and plan to make almost all the designs.

Marilee: The book is well illustrated, the English translation adequate and the patterns were intact in an envelope in the back. I haven't made up anything yet, but did look through the instructions which seem clear and easy to understand. The pattern pieces should be traced and seam allowances added. Unlike some Japanese sewing books with patterns, these somewhat oversized designs should fit "western" bodies better. There are charts to help with dimensions and fitting. As for lengths, I suggest checking and measuring as Americans are generally taller than the average Japanese female.

gobigeventsgobigevents: This is a book of "easy to sew patterns" however not as easy as buying a pattern from the store. For reference to new sewers, unlike Simplicity or other store-bought patterns, the pattern pieces are graphed out in different colors and line styles. You must use the instructions to locate the pattern. Then you use tracing paper or tissue paper to trace the pattern and add the seam allowance to each piece. Instructions and pattern layout are clear, but you do need to read and use your noggin. Consider it up-skilling your sewing game. I recommend starting with something simple like the hat. To see how it works and how she writes and gives instructions. That is where I started, and it took me 2 hours from start to finish. Also, go to youtube when struggling, There are helpful videos posted from other sewers using the book. I think her IG or "Japanese sewing studio" IG? Do host sew-alongs? with content on how to sew specific patters as well as teach you how to find and trace the patterns. For reference, I started learning to sew with Burda Magazine, so this book was a breeze. I consider myself an intermediate sewer.

The Fairy Queen: Great first book on Japanese patterns. What you will need: A roll of paper (I bought mine on here, search for exam table paper,) because you will have to trace the pattern. And at least "Confident Beginner" sewing skills (The instructions are in English, but are very basic.) The patterns are versatile and very much the Japanese aesthetic. Don't expect anything fitted - these are loose, flowing, baggier styles meant to be made of cottons and linens. The kind of styles that lend themselves well to fabric painting or funky trims. If you are thinking of trying Japanese patterns, this is a great choice.

alice: I bought this upon a friend recommendation as she said it's a good start.i don't like over half of the designs myself, but it's still a good price for the amount of patterns you get. The only problem is the sizing, I understand maybe it was initially catered to other countries, but I'm a size 10 and in the biggest size provided by the book. Most designs are quite baggy, so if you don't mind it will probably work up a couple of sizes more (though I don't think this will work for skirts and trousers), otherwise I'd not recommend for sizes above 12

J. WestJ. West: Loved the designs in this book when I saw it and couldn't wait to try sewing one. You will need tracing paper on hand to trace from the master patterns (included). Although I think my pattern copying was less than perfect, (I didn't have the best tracing materials!) ,I was pleasantly surprised to discover how easily the pattern went together. I used a lightweight Indian block printed cotton, and the weight was well suited for this design. The workshirt (pictured) has gathers at the neck, so avoid bulkier cottons. According to the book's size guide, I would have worn a large (US size 6). I sized down to a medium and was glad I did. The fit is excellent.

The designs throughout are artfully done and well designed. I can't wait to try another! This book reignited a passion for more tailored sewing. I really love this book!

g: So far I've made two dresses and the hat from this book and I love them all. The book is extremely well done, fun to flip thru and read in addition to having patterns that are well explained and fun to sew. I can't wait to make more. Many times I'll want to make just one or two of the items in a sewing book but I see myself making most of the patterns in this great book! I can't recommend enough. I'm a somewhat experienced sewist but think most of the patterns will be great for beginners, I think the only tricky part for those new to sewing may be tracing and adding seam allowances, as is common may patterns are included on each pattern sheet. As far as tracing the patterns it's well worth the work. I've purchased other Japanese sewing books before but haven't made anything from them yet & Nani Ironize Sewing Studio has been an excellent way for me to get started.
