SM: Like other reviewers have commented above, great bike carrier but poor new design on “universal lock in” skewer. Will hold forks firmly but difficult to get the fit right compared to previous skewer design. Also says lock sold separately…but looks like locks serve no purpose because even if you lock the skewer, the tightening bolt on the other end can be unscrewed and the locked skewer comes off entirely..so someone can easily steal the whole rack without any tools except for the “locked skewer” it appears. Update: Original skewer was defective. Replacement fits properly and can be bolted tightly and locked.

Bill McCart: I got one of these for my bike two years ago and just bought another one for my wife's bike. It's relatively easy to install, is solid as a rock, and really holds the bike in place. As with many roof racks, getting the bike onto and off of the rack can be challenging for short people or those who have modest upper body strength. I try to park on the street where I can use the curb to get me several inches closer. But overall this is an excellent rack and is also well priced compared to others (which is why I bought another one rather than a different model). Recommended!

Above the Smoke: In this review I compare two similar rooftop bike racks, the Yakima,
Yakima ForkLift Fork Mount Rooftop Bike Rack ,
and the Thule,
Thule Sprint Fork Mount Carrier 528

These racks are designed to attach to the crossbars of original factory roofracks of a wide variety of modern vehicles. Each holds the bike by the fork and the rear wheel. Each is well built and lockable. I own both, but have most experience with the Yakima over nearly five years. Though both are good products, they are not equal, and there are clear grounds for a choice beyond the price differential (Thule currently costs 57% more than the Yakima).

The stability of this sort of rack is dependent on the width of the clamp that attaches to the original cross bar and the maximum separation of original crossbars that the rack's clamps can adapt to.

Clamp Width
Yakima: 4.8"
Thule: 4.1"
Yakima is better

Maximum clamp separation (center to center):
Yakima: 42"
Thule: 31.5"
Yakima is better

The stability of the bike on the rack is dependent on the quality of the fork clamp and rear wheel tie down....

E. D. Hensley: I just installed and mounted my bike. All works perfectly. I mounted this on a 2015 Subaru Outback, using the car's existing crossbars (the ones that can be tucked away). Very easy installation (though I suggesting watching the videos on YouTube and Yakima's site--they're better than the written instructions for seeing the installation in 3D). The rack is the perfect one for the aero-shaped factory crossbars. The adjustmants possible (moving the jaws up or down, etc.) made it fit snugly and easily. Because the crossbars are so low to the roof, it paid to put down towels to protect the roof and it also meant that it was tight working with the toggle bolt since I have big hands, but loosening it enough to move freely made that part pretty easy too. One suggestion for anyone with the same car: mount the bike backward (rear wheel forward on car); that will mean that the bike/rack is completely out of the way of the hatch. All in all, I'm very happy that I found these instead of trying to adapt my old system to the car. This looks a lot more streamlined and elegant.

Daniel: I have 2 of these mounted on the factory crossbars of my 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. Once you tighten them down, they aren't going ANYWHERE! (except wherever your car goes...)

As I'm sure other people have mentioned, make sure to put the end cap on, otherwise the rear wheel holder will fall off when you don't have a bike strapped down. Also, be sure to ratchet the rear wheel strap in even if you do not have a bike mounted! I made this mistake, and drove to work with it not in the ratchet. By the time I got there the strap was gone and had to order a new one. ($8)

I have a total of about 15hours with 2 bikes/racks (Trek FX7.5 and Specialized Sirrus Sport) on the top of my car and never once felt edgy thinking they were unstable. Been on the interstate with 35mph winds going 75mph and the bikes hardly vibrated or shook. Very easy to tighten the bikes down. The front locking skewer is tougher to get the right tightness at first but after a few times doing it it's very easy. The back wheel just ratchet straps in... super easy!

Quality is superb!!! Locking skewer is stainless steel and all of the plastic is of very nice strong quality. The...
