Graham: Work exactly as mentioned... Nice blade edge to spark the rod (many others i have used have been rounded or flat edged which need a LOT to get the rod sparking).

This rod even starts working (slightly) even before the paint is scraped - This is the main issue *noobs* have... they think ferro rods don't have a protective coating. This coating is to protect against the air and elements (which over time can actually impede the use of the rod, and render it useless - So DO NOT scrape ALL of the paint off! Only scrape what you need)

Also the built in Jute Is very handy for tinder in emergency situations! - Would definitely buy again when more are in stock

K G: Haven’t actually used it yet but looks like great fire starting material. The tin it comes in is packed very tightly with the material and it’s a very nice tin able to keep it well protected. I recommend this product.

Amazon Customer: I've been using different alternatives to matches and lighters for a while now and this baby throws off a lot of sparks and heat. The sparks don't die off right away too, they stay for a decent amount of time, which impressed me.
It's not as long as I was hoping but it still works well if you know what you're doing.
I took this baby on a test run on a long weekend in the bush of NS during the winter. I didn't have to use a match once. I used some dry birch bark and after a few good swipes I had a roaring fire.

Jsy kit junkie: The design of the striker bar, wrapping around the rod is a distinct plus, as I prefer to use a dedicated striking tool. A fire tinder lanyard is a sensible addition and indicates a well-thought-out product. I am happy to recommend this kit.

Neologian: I'm a bit baffled by the "works okay with practice" or "not for newbie" reviews. It's not like this is a complicated machine that requires close attention to complicated instructions before you can use it. It consists of two parts....... and the instructions can be as simple as "rub the sharp edge of the striker against the rod" LOL.

Okay sure, ferro rods require a certain amount of force to be applied from a reasonably sharp edge (which exists on the striker.) I suppose someone completely unfamiliar with the concept could attempt to use the rounded body of the striker against the rod but a quick look at the box would resolve that.

I found the rounded striker that basically curves around the rod to be a brilliant idea as it allows you to create a package not much bigger than a hefty ball point pen. Most flat strikers dangle off the end of paracord and don't create as compact a package.

In any case, after the first pass to remove the protective paint, the two I bought throw more sparks than the 4th of July. Highly recommended.

Pavly FayekPavly Fayek: The WG Fire Set is every outdoorsy person's favorite tool but feels like a toy because it's just asking to be struck again. It really brings out the pyromaniac in all of us. However it is an effective and dependable fire starter, sparking with every attempt and making fire building easier. It's useful on colder days when trying to spark a lighter is tough with numb thumbs, but this you could light with your gloves on.
It's also relatively small so it's light and easy to pack. Also, WG show their professionalism with appealing and compact packaging that can be kept or set aside after opening. The paracord makes for easy transportation if you wish to tie it to something or just wrap it up and put it in your pocket.
All in all, I'm super pleased with the WG Fire Set and can't wait for my next campfire!!

Deanna: This product was a gift for my husband. It was a little difficult to angle it properly and get a spark. We did get a few but not enough to ignite anything. This is probably a product best for the true outdoors person. We will continue to try. I liked the design and packaging a lot.
