anon: Why would you buy any other kit when this is the BEST! Included so much flint that I'm going to leave one of the two huge chunks at home because I simply don't want to carry it around (weight).
At first I had a hard time getting the stones to both fit in the tin, until I realized the seller had hand-drawn a diagram of how they fit together on the lid! The striker is top notch, easy to hold and big enough for a full hand grip without feeling clumsy at all, and it had some slight marks on the striking surface indicating it was likely tested before shipping. I'm interested to try out the knapping part of the striker, I think it would work but the edges of the flints I recieved are all sharp enough to throw sparks, so there's no need right now. I think its certainly a good thing to have in the field though. I was able to throw sparks on my first strike, and I attribute this to the quality of both the flints and striker. Included is a generous amount of charcloth, enough for quite a few fires, and the instructions are excellent. The included birch bark is also excellent. The rope tinders seem like they'd do their jobs too, I just prefer to challenge myself and use tinder gathered on...

Joshua Meredith: I purchased this because I have always wanted to attempt fire making using flint and steel. I also have Champaign tastes and a Budweiser budget. This kit fits the roll of practical and quality.
It comes with an instruction guide on how to use the flint and steel properly. On the reverse is a guide on making charred cloth. The kit itself is jam packed with all the necessary tools for a fire.
The contents of my kit contained the following items: 1 large piece of English flint, 1 small piece of English flint, several natural fiber lengths of rope and twine ( jute, hemp, manila) a few bits of charred denim and a piece of birch bark to protect the charred cloth. 1 steel striker in a C ring design. Small tin similar to an Altoids tin.
After a minute or two of practice I was able to make sparks. Your mileage my vary. With the proper fire lay you can get a flame going in no time. This is a great kit for beginners and experienced users. Young users should be supervised by someone experienced with the materials presented in this kit.
Vern takes excellent care of his customers and takes the time to give an encouraging word to you on your invoice. Definitely worth...

Ruben: This is a great little kit. Comes with everything you'll need to get a fire going. Opened it up, read the instructions, made a nest, sparked char cloth, ignited nest, made fire. It was literally that quick.
I will admit that I watched some videos on how to use flint and steel so that may have helped on the learning curve. I suggest you do the same.
Some tips that I might suggest are:
1) Glance the steel against the flint. No need to try and hit it hard. You're igniting small pieces of steel.
2) Use your wrist. You don't need your whole arm to do this. Your wrist will produce enough force to shave off tiny bits of steel to create a spark.
3) Use a sharp edge. Always use a sharp edge of the flint when striking the flint. It makes making sparks considerably easier.
4) Place the medium you wish to catch the spark on top of the flint. As you strike in a downward motion the majority of the sparks will be on top of the flint as opposed to underneath it. That seems to be the easiest way to catch a spark although you can catch something beneath as well. It just seems a little harder to do.
I've had a bit of fun with this kit and I like how its compact in a...

marcia clark: This simple, compact, matchless fire starting kit arrived with a hand written note concerning how to repack the tin with everything because the two pieces of flint were so large for the tin. It was clearly advertised as containing one large or two small pieces of flint depending on what was in stock. I was extremely pleased with this because how large is large going to be, and worse, how small were small going to be. In addition to the note which was about how to repack things there is a hand drawn diagram in the inside of the lid showing the correct placement of the flints down to the detail of which side faces up. I am very impressed with all of this kit. there is a two d=sided printed page of instructions of how to use this with personal experience comments on one side and on the backside a detailed recipe of how to make char cloth which comes highly recommended to use when starting a matchless fire. I liked the approach to make your own rather than buy another product of theirs. I may not have occasion to buy another one of these, unless I think of someone who would like it as a gift, but give it five stars for others to see and than buy this great value kit. This may be my...
