Igo Hummaan: Much of this book is focused on the role of oil and gas in the global economy, and how different countries like the U.S., Russia, Saudi Arabia, and China play their respective parts in the discovery, recovery, import, and export of these fuels, including some maps that show where the major pipelines and tanker routes are. But there is really no "new map" that is shown or described as such; it's more a metaphor for how the geopolitics surrounding the global petro-chemical industry shift over time and where that's landed us today. Topics like EVs and climate change aren't addressed until the end of the book and are not its major focus, so if that's your primary interest, you may want to look elsewhere.

I have not ready any of the author's previous works but I agree with other reviewers that he is an excellent writer who knows how to make the potentially dry subject-matter compelling for the average reader. The only complaint I have about this book is that it ultimately reads more like a collection of separate-but-related essays, than a continuous whole. That said, the "essays" themselves cover interesting and important subject-matter, so there is much you can learn from this...

Fabio Veras Innovation: A rigorous and complete analysis of the geopolitical and economic movement based on energy and sources. Very rich in data and insights.

John M. Servoss: A person learns about the interactions between the use of energy vs the need for energy. It is a real world evaluation of the movement and use of energy resources. The size of the carbon energy market is substantial bigger, than anyone has imagined and it is going to be bigger in the future. (Two billion people still burn firewood for cooking). To change the energy footprint is both a huge opportunity and a major challenge for us. One must first understand what the needs are, and how much energy is now available. This book gives a person the information about the present market, and where investment in solar, wind and nuclear could save transportation cost, and provide energy security for everyone.

John Gammage: This book requires a sequel to cover the period since Russia invaded Ukraine which event has upended the energy scene once again.

Sharon Miller: I retired from the company partly owned by the author, Daniel Yergin. I did not know him personally, but have heard him speak a number of times and have read every book he has written. He probably has as much insight on the geopolitical dynamics of the global energy landscape as anyone alive, and he has a real ability to pick out what is important, summarize, and make it understandable. He also takes what might appear to be a dry topic and turn it into a compelling read. This book was published before the invasion of Ukraine, and even before Biden was elected. But as you read, it will be clear Mr. Yergin would not have been surprised by current events. (This book is definitely not a partisan political book, and you will find no political arguments within).
During the summer of 2020 I had the privilege of attending a Zoom meeting in which Mr. Yergin was being interviewed about this book. At the time, Biden was campaigning on his desire to put the US oil and gas industry out of business. I had the chance to ask Mr. Yergin about this. At the time, he said that, despite the rhetoric, he did not think Mr. Biden would want to be the president to jeopardize US energy independence....

Peter: Daniel Yergin's book "The New Map" is well worth reading, especially at this time when the whole issue of energy security is so relevant.
The author gives the reader a comprehensive view of the state of energy world and the geopolitical situation - written before the Ukraine war - with insight. Chapters relating to US shale industry, Russian gas and oil and China's energy quest are worth the value of the book.
It is a book rich on details regarding its subject and reflects well the concerns about future energy demands at this challenging time.
