Discover the secrets of creative and unconventional music recording techniques with Sylvia Massy's Recording Unhinged: Creative and Unconventional Music Recording Techniques (Music Pro Guides). This book is one of the best acoustic engineering Books on the market, offering exceptional binding and page quality, easy-to-follow instructions, and easy-to-read text. Get great value for your money with this must-have guide to recording music!Grieve Hardie: 1. Are you in a band? 2. Do you have money? 3. Do you enjoy oldies talking about the old days? 4. Are humble boast anecdotes your thing? 5. Are you not technically savvy? If you answer ‘yes’ then you’ll love has been boomer vignettes of how classic rock and pop got made. White music. Mostly tho plenty HUGE stars like Whitney Houston get a mention is as side shows to the engineers. There’s half a page on Lee Perry. Nothing on Osbourne Ruddock. Lots of rules on how to break ‘the’ ‘rules’. Has the air of rich kids going kwayzee with expensive classic gear. It’s nowhere near history. Much closer to ‘ME my life, aren’t I great’. I wanted less egos and more ingenuity and a higher level of intended audience. The zany wacky Cali acid trip ‘vibe’ is well gone, maaan and the personal touch art is really effin cringy like a kid’s painting on the fridge. It’s like she used this book and they used recording as therapy. I wanted to hear less narcissistic personality disorder and more creative inspiration. But music industry is full of truculent incumbents like these sell out fks. This is just cooked fish not a book on angling.

Manu Agarwal: I've read 75% of the book. It features some exciting incidents and bizarre ideas from the recording sessions of great artists, mentions some good modern and vintage sound equipments, recording techniques and focuses on the artistic aspects of sound recording and mixing. I would recommend this book to the newcomers in the sound industry.

Apple-O: I'm an amateur, mostly self-taught musician and song writer, who has done plenty of DIY recording at home, with equipment that costs no more than a few hundred dollars. I am not someone with a lot of technical training or experience with professional recording studios or equipment.
Sylvia's book was a joy to read. Although some of the equipment she mentions is high end stuff I have never used or even entertained the idea of owning ($1000+ microphones, studio compressors & EQs, etc.) the majority of her book presents approaches and techniques that anyone can use. I consider myself a bit of a "mad scientist" in my recording and creative approach (you kind of have to be on a budget!), and very much appreciate Ms. Massey sharing her experiences and tips.
I have read plenty of books and articles on making recordings, and sometimes the reading is so dry, I just lose interest. Not so here! It was a pleasure to read, and when I finished, I wasn't ready for it to end! More, please!
It was awesome to discover a kindred spirit with a real appreciation for thinking "outside the box" and am excited to try some of these techniques.

P.R.Budd: Forgot what you think you know Sylvia takes you on a journey of audio challenging you to think outside the box, I have this book on my studio coffee table all the time and it's great to pick up and grab some inspiration from!

lavam: I was really excited to read this after reading about her work and watching some of her YouTube videos. I very much enjoyed the book and will definitely be reading it again, but I hope this book is a primer for a future book detailing more of her own studio trickery, like a mad “cookbook”, which is what I was hoping to get more of in this one.
There’s a lot of input via stories and quotes from others, which is valuable, but I prefer her own unique perspective, which is what initially led to me purchase the book.
This was definitely an inspiring read and I love the illustrations. The vibe I get from her is that she’s managed to maintain a great wild energy that seems to get lost with age for most adults and I’m very interested in what else she comes up with next.

ken: A very inspirational book that is chock-full of music history! I absolutely love the illustrations. (So did my kids, which is awesome as I encourage them to join me in my home studio)
Sylvia has ridiculously impressive credentials, yet I never felt she was name dropping or trying to impress readers. She is very clearly working to motivate aspiring musicians, mixers, masterers, and producers to be creative and think outside the box. You can do more with less if you put your mind and heart into the exploration of the possibilities of recording sounds.
Her encouragement was relentless, infectious, and effective. It renewed my enthusiasm by validating the process of experimentation as opposed to following the formulas of established "gurus" in the many fields of music.
The book was well thought out, organized perfectly, and peppered with thoughts from many different producers; offering lots of viewpoints and interesting thoughts from others in the industry.
I highly recommend it to anyone in the music recording industry, but especially to home studio enthusiasts like myself.
