Trying really hard to use these “soft” techniques learned here and in “The Soul of a Horse,” by Joe Camp.
Some I see DON’T. They exert force and it shows!
Both are excellent reads.

Kindle Customer: Finally...it all makes sense...49 years of working with horses is so much clearer in my mind. I had bits of it here and there. Never enough to put all the pieces together until now. I have been able to look back at the different horses I have had and see each one of them in the examples of the stories Rashid writes. I could see myself creating some of the exact issues in the stories he has written going all the way up till now from when I first started as a child to a more recent horse. I could see the resemblance of the different trainers and farriers I had in the past and how the horses reacted. I always wanted to communicate with my animals & horses. I have always loved horses. Reading this book has given me new energy and perspectives. I find it a comfort and a relief to go back and look at each horse that has been in my life and see more insight into why they were doing some of the things they did, what I was going thru at that time in my life and put it all together. I remember as a teen reading horse training articles. Two come to mind right away. One was an article that said horses were stupid, lazy and bullies. Miss Deborah Norris: As with all of Mark Rashid's books that I have read to date this is a combination of lyrical story telling and thought provoking experiences - presented in a gentle and non-confrontational manner to allow the reader to decide whether they wish to go along with the information being detailed before them, or not. Rather like the entire ethos of Mr Rashid's training/leadership/partnership philosophy with horses.

Very readable, difficult to put down and always a joy. I can easily return to his writings and get more out of them each time. There are layers of subtlety and plenty of rich experience to learn from.

This is not a "how to" manual of methods. Indeed Rashid shies away from having "tools" or "techniques" to achieve an end, and details beautifully and with full justification why he feels this is the best route for him to take with horses. He leaves it up to the reader to decide whether that is something they can take on board and work with.

His message comes across loud and clear. He's not there to claim a new method or earth-shattering secret technique to fix all problems... but believes through his own broad and deep experiences with horses that quiet calm...

Satchfan: I bought this book for my husand and he couldn't put it down, I had to wait til he'd finished it to get a look at it myself. We all ride, our son is a Pony Club member who competes show jumping, but we also all ride western. However, you don't need to be a western rider to appreciate the pearls of wisdom that Mark spreads liberally through this book, (which is essentially a series of stories about experiences which have shaped his philosophy on training, living and working with horses) and your horse might well benefit from them too. Don't expect a book that tells you what tack, gadget or 'method' you should use to get instant results, that's not what this book is and not what Mark is about, it's about understanding how horses are motivated and behave and react to what we do and how we treat them, and insight into how changing the way we do it can help the horse to understand what we want from them and to do it in harmony instead of conflict. Buy it, it might just change your life, at the least it will give you another perspective on how to enjoy life with horses.

Amazon Customer: I'm affraid this might sound a little repetitive with the preivous reviews, but what can I say ?
Mark Rashid as an empathy for the horse that seems unmatched by anyone else. He falls in the same category with Buck Brannaman, Ray Hunt (and Tom Dorrance I assume, though I haven't got to the work of this other great horseman yet).
Rashid is also a fatalist, in a good, quiet kind of way. He never seems to have an agenda with horses, all will fall into place when the time is right. Sure might sound a little frustrating for goal driven riders, but as a horse owner without any deadline (I don't compete in anything !) I was at ease with that concept. Taking the time is very important, and more often then not trying to save time actually ends up losing lots of it by having to redo things later, which is always harder than doing them right in the first place !
Rashid is great at reading horses, I'd say that's probably the best strength of this book, help you learn, through the description of any particular problem, how he interpreted, and therefore acted upon it. It can also be discouraging sometimes because it actually goes to show there is not ONE method for all, every horse is...

T. Moffatt: A good insight as to where the author is coming from in regards to his horse training methods.

I have to admit to being somewhat disappointed after the first read through, nice stories but I was looking for more meat on the bones, how to trailer load, how to catch a difficult horse. The stories were well written and I enjoyed them but didn't see the point of the book.

I was putting a horse away after a lesson and he was always eager to get back to his stall - too eager sometimes. I had been using some NH methods to make him wait and they had been working, his manners had improved. This night as I walked into the stall he stopped at the door and when I pulled him he came forward one step and turned before backing his butt onto the stall wall. I was tired, it was late and I was thinking get in here so I can untack you and get home. Then I remembered a chapter in the book where the author had ignored the horses instincts and I was doing the same. Something was scaring this horse. I looked around and sure enough there was a dark shape at the far end of the stall. My first thought was rat, as probably was the horses, but it was a part of a rug when I walked over and...
