Colonel D: This true life tale of one woman’s unlikely cross-country adventure makes for a light read. In 1954, 63 year old Annie Wilkins, a single person and failed farmer sets out on a journey from Maine to the California coast after being told by her physician she only has two years to live.

What’s remarkable is Wilkins’ mode of transportation…she chose to travel by horseback accompanied only by a small dog. Virtually penniless the intrepid wanderer relies on the kindness of strangers as she faces perilous weather and speeding motor vehicles on stretches of the new interstate system. Time and again her faith in her fellow Americans is rewarded with food, shelter, and kindness.

“The Ride of Her Life” is not the most exciting book you’ll ever read but the reader can’t help but admire the spirit and tenacity of Ms. Wilkins and her spunky four-legged companions. It’s impossible to imagine anyone considering a similar journey today, let alone successfully completing it. In 2023 Wilkins would probably get run down by a distracted motorist or murdered by a serial killer but in 1954 it was truly a different time. Clocking in at 282 pages this book makes for a...

A-1: Amazing true story with lots of mid-century history and Americana that is wonderfully well written. I will be purchasing the hard copy to keep in my library and loan to friends.

cathleen D. Stewart: This fabulous story is about one "can do" desperate woman digging deep into her courage to begin a journey with seemingly insurmountable odds against her. Filled with stories of remarkable people she met along her way and the animals that became her family as she traveled from the East coast to the West coast without a real roadmap. It serves as an important reminder not only to mature women but others as well to take courage and "listen to our hearts".

Lynn W: A well written and researched account of the travels of Annie Wilkins as she made her way from her home in Maine to the West Coast on Horseback in the 1950's. A remarkable feat filled with great adventure and personal life experiences encountered along the way! An engaging story and easy read. Highly recommend!

noreen scanlan: Sorry to have to come to the end wish it could have gone on forever!
Felt I was there with her along her long journey with her horses and dog as she made her way from
Maine to California with little money just depending on the kindness of strangers back in 1954/55.
Shows the old parts of America before they became modernised and the old ways which were lovely.
So well written.

Stanley C.: This is more a story of a lady & her horse Tarzan. It's about resilience & courage.
Imagine a 62 year old Annie Wilkens told she has 2 years to live & she decides she
wants to see the Pacific ocean so she takes off from Maine to follow her dream.
I gave this book to a lady friend who loves horses. ( Annie passed away at 89 ).
