CB: This is a great book to read if you want to understand why you want to ride horses. This book successfully captures the sense of controlling a powerful creature, but also wanting to do it in a way that the powerful creature enjoys, also. If you want to ride your dragons by riding horses, this is a great read.

Jennifer B: This book is wonderful!!!! I read it while my daughter was in recovery and I couldn't put it down. Dr. Hamilton explains how horses live in the present, ALWAYS @ 100%, in order to survive. He shares with his readers how learning about horses can teach us to live in the present as well. If you can't get out of the past; if you are afraid of the future; or if you just can' t seem to figure out how to live in the present, read this book. Dr. Hamilton shares touching examples of how he uses equine therapy to help his patients get the very most out of every single day. His terminal patients live longer, fuller lives. You don't have to be ill to benefit from this book. You don' t have to love horses. I knew nothing about horses when I read this book. It was recommended to me by a equine therapist to help me understand how I could stop worrying about my daughter all the time by living in the present. It has helped me understand the beautiful benefit of living in the present. I find myself wanting to read it over and over whenever I lose my way. Thank you so much Dr. Hamilton. Great for all people. Everyone should read this book!

teaches respect and consideration and a calm approach to teaching rather than training. there IS a difference.

Jane Howard: I had read Dr. Hamilton's first book, but had no idea he was a horse person. Being a physician, theologian, and horsewoman myself, I find his writings to be spiritually enlightening, reinforcing what I already feel.
His work is authoritative, experiential, well written and logically sequenced.
Anyone who holds to the theory that there is a special gene that makes us love horses, the Jungian theory of universal connection, and has some medical knowledge will enjoy this book immensely. Those who adhere to Jungian Theory but do not love horses probably won't get it generally because of closed mindedness. If there is anyone out there who hasn't loved horses all his/her life and changes that attitude based on this book I want to hear from you. That would mean there might yet be hope for those who watch but do not see.
I wonder if there is another passion that makes one soar like being one with a horse does? Would it be love of flying? How would we relate that to connecting with nature and not machine? Or is machine another facet of nature? Let us read this book and ponder these thoughts among us.

Trish in Cumbria: I thought that this book was really interesting, helpful and at times sharply insightful; especially when putting it in context with other horsemanship books I have read & the Zen philosophy.
However I can see that the content may have seemed a bit mumbo-jumbo in places; especially if you're not already a firm believer in the centuries old ethoses of horsemanship.
Overall this book has a lot to offer & well worth the read.

mae lee sun: Dr. Hamilton has the distinct honor of being gifted with a brilliant mind and compassionate heart. He has used his knowledge of neuroscience, horses and zen to bring a very practical and sensible manual on horse training to the world- with both the horse and rider in mind as a symbiotic unit. Most so called natural horsemanship trainers neglect to mention the spiritual nature of the horse in conjunction with the rider and so fear to tread into the space of 'energy' or 'chi' - I imagine partly because they fear they won't be taken seriously. However, Dr. Hamilton is succinct and pragmatic in his articulation of training methods while also establishing the fact that a person's energy field, i.e. thoughts, intentions, posture, philosophy, etc. will always have an impact on the horse.
Two of the major aspects that seems neglected in training are time and patience. Being with a horse requires one be acutely aware of their human tendencies to want things right away so the horse can 'do' something for them- jump, walk, turn, stop, perform, whatever the case may be as to why you wanted the horse in the first place.
If you're willing to take full responsibility for yourself...
