Deece Eckstein: I've always been fascinated by the legends of King Arthur and the Round Table. Joseph Campbell discusses elements of those stories in his magnificent "The Masks of God: Creative Mythology," but I'd not seen those synthesized in one place until this excellent book. As usual, Campbell combines extensive knowledge, deep insight, and his storytelling gift into a readable survey of these Western treasures.

MR G O KIDGELL: As a serious student of mythic symbolism I find Campbell's insights to be truly inspirational. This book did not disappoint and, as usual, his insigthful symbolic interpretations are matched by his hisoricla research into the origins and dvelopment of the Grail legend.

steve wood: This book on the Arthurian and Grail myths is a gold mine of meticulous research by Campbell and the editor of the book, Evans Lansing Smith. A wide range of classical writings from this age has been integrated into a single, carefully-integrated and cohesive narrative that reads like a storybook. It passes muster as a great piece of scholastic work, but it is at the same time a complete delight for the casual reader, with one qualification. I recommend that one also needs to have a copy of von Eschenbach's Parzival alongside. It too is a delightful read.

musicfan28if: Campbell exams Arthurian myth within a comparative mythology context. One page you’re reading about an Arthurian tale, the next several pages you’re reading about various tales from around the world. You’re left with the feeling that there’s not much originality in Arthurian myth and it was already done before, many times over. But Campbell notes there’s a certain individuality in Celtic myth.

jellymoon: Even devotees of Campbell's work are obliged to ask themselves whether another posthumous work, however well-edited, should be put forth. After all, Campbell did not, akin to his early mentor Heinrich Zimmer, for example, die young and before he had the opportunity to publish his best work. That is to say, we have The Hero with a Thousand Faces and The Masks of God; we have his collections of essays, The Mythic Image, The Inner Workings of Outer Space and Myths to Live By; we even have the uncompleted, posthumous Historical Atlas of World Mythology, all works of Campbell's prose and not merely transcriptions of his lectures. Yes, Campbell could be a spell-binding lecturer - the Mythos video series is proof of that (I recommend the lecture on Parzival, "The Path of the Heart" as a tour de force example) and of course Campbell is most well-known perhaps, in the end, for his Moyers interviews. But it's his prose that I find the most lastingly rewarding.
What did I like about Romance of the Grail? Specifically, the "Editor's Foreward." Evans Lansing Smith is an Arthurian scholar himself and someone whom, as he tells us, at the age of twenty-six encountered Campbell for the...
