Ska Boy: This is one of the best adaptations of a Shakespeare play. They place Romeo/Leonardo Di Caprio and Juliet/Claire Danes within modern times in Florida with the Capulets and Montagues two rival mafia families. They maintain the original dialogue which I thought was good because what is Shakespeare without his words? Di Caprio and Danes play their characters as a love struck couple who couldn’t keep their eyes off each other after the moment they met. At the same time a lot of scenes are the Capulets and Montagues on the beach with guns which could get a bit goofy.

Michael C Massey: This has always been one of my favorite movies but I hadn't seen it in a while and only in DVD quality. When I couldn't find it streaming anywhere in HD I looked here and couldn't pass it up for $6.99! I was cautiously optimistic due to some luke warm reviews of the video and audio quality but not only was I pleasantly surprised but I was blown away! Watching on a 1080i projector with very large screen and DD5.1 surround sound was wonderful! The sound was amazing and I can't find any fault with the video quality. If you love this movie (or haven't seen it) and don't have it in HD then grab this!

Yukine: When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.
Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the...

samspennell: Outstanding! There is very little wrong with this movie. Maybe the best use of music of any movie of my lifetime. I thought the campy-frenetic energy worked rather brilliantly with the somewhat "foreign"/awkward Shakespearian wording. I think it matched the tone of the language very well. Hearing Shakespeare is a somewhat surreal experience to begin with. I believe this is the best work ever by Baz Luhrmann, and this is the peak of his career (as of 2014), and his magnum opus. The best use of a song ever may be "Kissing You," by Des'ree at the Capulet ball. 100% captivating and beautiful. It is astonishingly beautiful, and I was surprised that someone captured the music that was in my head.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure that too much of the acting in this movie was really award worthy, at least coming from Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. The standouts are in the minor roles played by John Leguizamo, Paul Sorvino, and Pete Postlethwaite. The directing was so overpowering, though, that this movie still manages to be a classic without particularly strong leads. Claire Danes's face and presence really seem to say something, but she really just doesn't have the talent. She is...

Dan Morgan-kane: What Romeo & Juliet means to different people will be just that, different. To some, this is a tale of fictional romance; a very well done piece by a legend in Literature and nothing more.
To some, this is silly nonsense that doesn't necessarily hold its' place in the real world, perhaps to some in that class, it is dangerous in that it encourages vulnerability and even an unrealistic idea on love, or human relationships...
But I am sold. I am a normal modern human-being who, in a fast world, is often only receptive to what can catch my senses by shouting loud enough. But, after hearing and seeing Baz Lurhmann's sexy, modernised (but unadulterated) take on this classic love story, it has almost completely polarised my opinion and (lack of) interest in William Shakespeare, and what he has brought to the World (which as those already there will know, can be a big personal moment).
The story is well-set and well-played. It's quite hard to summarise in such a short article quite how large and complicated everything was, but it all comes together in an emotional climax that leaves many shattered at its' end.
I'm thankful for the musical score, which...
