B. R. Almer: I wanted this book to inspire a different watercolor technique. I found the book interesting and worth the read.

Nadine&Brian: I have all of Jean's books, but I must admit that this one is my favourite. I adore her beautiful fluid style of watercolour. Where a lot of botanical art is aiming to reproduce a perfect specimen, Jean takes a more abstract approach and allows the paint freedom to flow. Her work is less about perfection, more about the beauty of colour. She likes to say 'don't be a sheep, be unique' and her lessons are focused on freedom of expression just as much as teaching you the actual watercolour technique. With Jean, you learn to paint but it never feels pressured because creating an exact replica of her artwork is not the goal. It's all about the love of watercolour and she gives you this in abundance. She is a joy to learn from.

BLACKBEARY: The painting style of the flowers is loose and "flowy", not like a botanical identification drawing, so if you're looking for a book that teaches tight and photo like methods this is not the book for you. I was over-working my paintings to the point of the paper coming up and I was using 100% rag! This book will show me how to loosen up and paint a simile of an object. I feel this is a better way to start with water colours than to attempt photo like reproductions which is a skill set that scares me at this time. I think this book is a great start point for anyone wanting to learn water colours and will show you how the pigments react with water and the paper. Jean has some videos on YouTube so you can see what she does. Unfortunately, we can't see any pages of the book on this site.

Zengrl: I'm not going to repeat all the positive comments already posted...I agree! This book is full of beautiful images and instruction. I want to comment that the Kindle version is well worth getting! In fact, I am developing a collection of watercolor books in the Kindle version. But I am looking at them on a 12" iPad Pro! I believe that is what makes them doable. The color is fantastic, I can zoom in to read small print if and when needed, and, best of all, zoom in to examine image details. Otherwise, I can flip through the book's 2-page spreads just like a "real" book. And I love the fact that I can easily take my library with me wherever I go!
Just to be clear, I read one reviewer who complained that the Kindle version was in black and white and what was the point? Yes, if you read the book on a Kindle reader (such as a Paper White, which I also have, for reading only), it will be in black and white (and also too small.) I never expect a book with images to translate well to my little Kindle.
I understand the appeal of an actual book (I have those too!), but these books are also awesome using the Kindle reader (app) on a large iPad! (Maybe other tablets as well, but I...

jasmine: I am a fan of Jean Haines' work and have several of her books and eagerly awaited the publication of this one. The photography in the book is wonderful and Ms. Haines' paintings are as lovely as ever. Although I feel this is her best book to date I find there is something lacking. Yes, there are step-by-step demonstrations but in many cases they leave just a little to be desired. If you are hoping to learn about mixing colours then this is not the book for you. Ms. Haines uses "pure" colour from the tube the majority of the time and any mixing of colours happens when painting wet-in-wet, which can be unpredictable. The good news is that you do not need many different colours to complete the demonstrations. There is also little on tonal values.
If you love painting wet-in-wet, lifting out colour, then you will enjoy this book and learn a lot as to how watercolour paint behaves. Also the demos will hone your negative painting and observation skills. If you are a rank beginner you might find the book a bit daunting, but I think you can learn a lot with perseverance. However be prepared to accept the results--even if they are not really what you are aiming for.

Amazon Customer: I had waited about 6 months for this book to come out, it was worth the wait. I love this style of water coloring loose florals, she calls it a hybrid style, somewhere between realism and abstract painting. Her teaching style is easy to understand and follow. I took one star away because despite the fact that the book says this is for all levels, it really is a beginner book. There are gorgeous gallery images in the book, but not a lot of instruction for advanced techniques you see in her work. As per usual with all artist books, I'm sure that is what her classes are for. I'm just happy to get enough info to begin to learn how to paint flowers like this in watercolor. I suppose if you are already at an advanced level, you'll be able to figure out how she created her gallery paintings you see in the book. There seems to be a bit of cross over from her other books in this one. I don't own her other books but just from the images you see on Amazon for the other books it looks like her work on birds crossed over into this book, just a bit, and I see some of the flower paintings from this book in one of her other books. (I'm wondering now if there is more instruction available than...
