Sarah D: My 8yr old has been wanting to get into watercolors. She really loves working independently through this book and learning to draw with it. She started using watercolor colored pencils but I know she is looking forward to starting to use watercolor paints.

Tulli Mattes: I have been doing acrylic fashion art, and I want to learn watercolour fashion art, and I thought exercises like those contained in this book would get me used to the medium.

Kim Ealson: I'm just learning how to watercolor and this book does give some fun, easy to follow projects that you can do in 15-30 minutes. I'm a beginner so it does take me longer than someone with more experience, like the author. But she is very easy to follow and understand, gives great tips about color and color blending in the beginning of the book and the projects she has are fun for sure.

If you want a place to start in learning watercolor, this is definitely a good book.

Didi: Bellissimo, carta lucida, con fotografie e spiegazioni chiare. Bello replicare gli esercizi proposti che sono molto stimolanti e creativi e sinceramente facili da fare anche per chi non è professionista.

a mom: A great way to learn watercolor. Each painting is short and easy, so you feel like you’re succeeding. Every lesson introduces a new skill, and you really make progress. Love this book!

Charlotte Webb: The paintings in this book are very appealing and there are many to choose from. The problem is in the writing of the book. Suggestions I would make:

1) Put the information in the back (supplies, tips and advice) in the front.

2)The color mixing instructions are very unclear. Project colors will list some colors that are probably in your palette, but also "tints of..." and the instructions to make the tint are unclear. It shows little formulas to copy (that part is clear) of colors that are unlabled and hard to determine what they are. When i "googled' tints it says just add white to whatever color, but this is not what she's doing. She's mixing un-identified colors. (All that being said, I realize now that it doesn't matter that much. You don't need her exact colors. Having done a few paintings now I see that a little freestyling is definitely desirable.)

3) Instructions do not necessarily occur on the same page as the part of the picture you are working on. For example, step 3 could be on a different page than the demonstration of the painting. The Mountain Landscape is a perfect example of this. The demonstration of step 3 is on page 29, but the...

Adrian: I usually watch youtube videos for watercolours but needed something I could use offline during my holiday as the internet was going to be patchy. I absolutely love this book- I was very surprised as I thought I wouldn't like this format to learn. I've learnt so much from this book already and find it super simple and easy to follow. I can see my progress with each project which is really satisfying. There are so many projects to work your way through, and they are all gorgeous and fun to work on. I'm back from my holiday now but will continue to use this over the videos I was previously watching. Don't think twice about this book, it's awesome!

T. MastersT. Masters: I really like this book. It has lovely well thought out and explained projects for begginers. Where it sort of lost me was some of the animal projects......her cat and bear...well I want projects to aspire to not something a kid could have done.

SoozeSooze: I wasn’t sure about this book to begin with and dithered about purchasing it. But now I have it I’m so glad I got it because I know it will help me to improve my watercolour technique. This isn’t for the advanced watercolorist - I think it’s more aimed at beginner to intermediate levels. I’ve been painting with watercolour for 5 or 6 months - mainly florals but I want to try other things like landscapes, scenery and animals. I’ve already tried a couple of the exercises and because they aren’t too long it has meant if I don’t think I did it as well as the example in the book then I can redo it until I’m confident that I’ve mastered the technique. Each exercise is clearly broken down into stages that are easy to follow and the author gives examples at each stage that you can follow. I’ve bought about 10 watercolour colour books since I started watercolour and this is one of my favourites

MichelleBMichelleB: This is a lovely book with many unintimidating project-based watercolor lessons. It is truly a beginner's book, which is often not the case with books with that label. I did not give it 5 stars for two reasons.
Firstly, the color mixing instruction is extremely confusing for a beginner. While I appreciate the author's choice to be paint brand agnostic, at least use traditional pigment names consistently and include those names in the lesson. I have no idea what "tint of green" means, and mixing instructions consisting of unlabeled colored dots on the page are zero help. A beginner needs more specific direction than this.
Secondly, the author doesn't help the reader diagnose what went wrong when their painting doesn't turn out like the example in the book. I've been a watercolor beginner for about a year now and I struggled with the very first lesson, throwing away at least six failures before I managed to get the right amount of water on my paper, paint in my brush and effective technique. If I hadn't known what I already knew of watercolor, I would have become discouraged and quit before I managed to figure it out.
I include a photo of my eventual success, but also a few...
