Kindle Customer: I have this book in hardback and love it. Its a very good book. However the kindle version has chunks of text that are jumbled up. The lovely and useful illustrations are also messed up, rendering this kindle edition uselrss.
The print edition is wonderful.

PenFriendPenFriend: A lovely book with lots of educational and interesting tips for Anna's techniques. In fact, she is very generous information-wise. I teach watercolour painting as a well known Art College, and I found the ideas innovative and enlarging to my repertoire of the types of projects I can set students.
I do love Anna's big flower paintings, they are marvellous in theur own way. However, if you are a watercolourist rather than a botanical watercolourist, do be aware that the techniques of application are limited to a particular method, very controlled and neat. In particular, the method of applying paint, is more like 'drawing' with paint, rather than allowing the free flowing of colour to describe the form, colour is applied in short strokes which are gradually built up. The backgrounds are always white, in keeping with the style of botanical illustration and are rather like photographic iterations of flowers etc. However, I like the apparent simplicity of the technique and the method of applying a dark tone every now and then to allow the eye to see the mid tones. It is skillful.
I really love this book, I like Anna and the fact she has presented and marketed her work so well....

D. Hall: The book is very well written and there are many examples explaining techniques. I totally agree with the author when explaining tonal values and many artists will tell you to make your images into grayscales so tonal values can be observed. That is, if you're painting from photographs. A lot of botanical painters will tell a student to paint from life so that observation skills mature. The author's palette is quite large (22 colors) and those who like painting with a limited palette should really have no problems mixing greens, browns, or grays. A lot of the steps are needless, but may be good for beginners, however I suppose it depends on the person and how quickly they want a finished painting......also being careful not to overwork the paper. The author does not supply a photograph of each flower in the projects which limits not only creativity but individual perception. In other words, one must paint the way the author paints the flower. All the reader has is the grayscale image of the painting to start with, the instructions, and the finished painted image at the end. There are supplied drawings of the project flowers for the reader in the back pages of the book so they can...

AZT: I like Anna's painting style although mine is a bit different. I wish she had included the photographs of the projects in the book, although you can find some on her website if you join for the tutorials. You might not need the book if you joined as a member, but I ordered it before I joined. It is still a very nice reference book if you are interested in botanical painting. I actually discovered Anna from a Craftsy class. I have painted in oils forever but avoided watercolor due to it's unpredictability. I never felt I could control it. Between Anna's style and Billy Showell, I have learned how to use this medium and it is becoming a favorite. Oils are fun but take forever to dry. As an impatient person, I get immediate gratification using the glazing method with watercolor. For anyone who is a beginner my best advice is buy professional grade watercolors, decent synthetic brushes and good paper.

treen: if you have ever wanted to do fine watercoloring of flowers this is a book for you. I have always wanted to do this. I never had the skill. this delightful woman is so encouraging and a wonderful teacher (she gives wonderful advice on how to choose your paper and tools) i'm going into this slowly. I had started to do some watercoloring for a few years. I had started to improve, but it was a "hot mess" a lot of the time. it turns out, your paper and brushes and watercolors all make a huge difference in getting success. there are many styles of painting and this is just one of them. I have had very little training (except some online card classes and watching really good you tube videos - Sandy Allnock, Kristina Werner, Jennifer McGuire, Debbie Hughes, Kathy Racoosin are some of my favorites (they are cardmakers, but you can use their techniques for other kinds of painting) Have fun and enjoy!
