Sabrina Y: I wish it was a required book in every school, from lower to high school. We all need more education on the matter. We need to stop hiding cruelty and pretending we know where the products we consume come from. Animal cruelty is not an option. From city regulated animal shelters to factory farming, pets in neighborhoods, tourist related animal "activities", lab testing, and so on and on. We can all live in harmony, respecting each other and understanding our ways. It only takes slowing down, practicing compassion and opening our hearts to love fully.

Maxwell Mah: You can never go wrong with an Ingrid Newkirk book, she is one of the pioneers of animal rights and this is another beautifully written book.

veggie_dog: Read “eating animals” first. It is a better book in my opinion. If you want another recommendation read Ed Winters’ book. This book is still good but not better than the two above.

Jean Leeson: Absolutely love this book. I love the way Ingrid touches on a variety of animals and how they feel and live. It doesn't get boring at all and offers alot of scientific facts about animals. I really enjoy this book as I've learned lots of different facts about all my furry friends.

Amazon Customer: The first part of the book told many interesting points about animals and our relationship with them. When they started pointing out that animal experimentation has not lead to many relevant medical discoveries, I became a little more concerned. There was no mention of the discovery of insulin as a treatment for diabetes. I know that many dogs, pigs and cows suffered for this and I am grateful for their sacrifices because it has given me life. I read a little further in the book but it became more and more of a Vegan rant. A more balanced discussion would be preferable. Not everyone lives in places where a vegetarian diet is possible.

Snaggletooth: While the book is mostly a collection of animal facts, it rams home just how wrong our opinions are that we are somehow superior beings on this planet. Although when you consider that we are the only species that actively destroys its own environment, eats animal products that also destroy the environment and kill us, and that we have caused devastating viruses to arise (by our continual messing with other species) then it's easy to suggest that we are indeed the stupidest animals ever to have lived.

Stanley: When I was a thirteen year old kid in ninth grade biology, the teacher told us that all animals lived by instinct alone. Even then as a dumb hillbilly kid in the hills of Southern Indiana, heck we were all dumb, this didn't make sense. Dogs would respond to their names, farm animals learned the routine of the daily routine, birds learned that farmer's field work meant more insects, and the list goes on.
As years have passed considerable research has proven the biology teacher wrong. He also had a part time job pumping gas in a nearby town. Newkirk and her ghost writer use the first half of the book to document animal intelligence and it is incredible as even mold slime shows memory. The book's second half outlines things we can all do to protect animals and also gives considerable detail into substitutes for live animal products. Maybe there is hope for a better animalkind future. . .if we can convince the Chinese to quit eating stupid stuff and skinning live animals.
One negative. Hard cover books aren't what they once were. Now cheap paper covered cardboard and with Newkirk's book really cheap paper. For the money it's a ripoff. Text good. Book quality very poor.

JeffJeff: This book takes an epic view of the animal kingdom of which we are part, across the globe and throughout many millennia and disciplines of study. It's far from dry, though, with many amazing, stranger-than-fiction anecdotes and facts about the capacities and rich lives of animals of myriad varieties. I found it hard to put down.
The chapter on love in the animal kingdom, and the subsection about grieving in particular, really struck a chord with me. It put into a whole new perspective the many paeans and pontifications about the "human condition" expressed in other books and works of art. There is a much broader "animal condition", that while mind-blowingly diverse in some regards--has many profound commonalities between species.
It really puts human and animal motivations, cognition, social connections, feelings, and mortality in a deeply moving unified perspective. I knew some more popular examples of animal intelligence and connections, like the amazing life cycle of salmon. But most of the examples were very new and surprising to me. There's incredible stories involving individuals from octopuses to elephants really touched me and will stick with me.

yp: Beautifully written, and the information is presented in a warm and welcoming way. There is nothing preachy about this book. I felt sincere honesty radiating from the pages while reading this, and it touched on several beautiful heartwarming stories, some sad truths. This book is empowering, while at the same time, brought tears to my eyes. I've been leading a cruelty free lifestyle since the age 14, and much of what was presented in this book was known to me, but it is definitely a keepsake to keep on the shelf so that I make pass it on to my kids one day. The world needs more of this, thank you
