Eric Benoit: Of short, interesting stories

EEE: An interesting book although I was hoping it would be more factual. The author mainly puts forward his thoughts on animal behaviour along with his observations to justify his thoughts. He does include some outside scientific studies but mainly it's his ideas.

SamLamb: The book has a lot of good information about animals. The author tends to be rather loose in his reasoning. But if we just don’t worry about that we get a lot of interesting stuff and it is enjoyable to read.

WFAGES: As usual, he's outdone himself. I didn't read it in one shot as it is more of a textbook, but enjoyed the descriptions of fungus that resembles teddy bear and that which resembles tiny elephants.. and about the navigation system of a moth being haywired with garden lights. Love how this author brings everything to life.

Doug D.: This book discusses the emotions and behavior of animals. It is well written and the stories will make you think about how you relate to the animals that share the planet with us. It is worth reading.
However, the author uses a lot of space arguing that animals have emotions. Here is the weakness of the book. But, to be fair, it is the same weakness I have seen in many books lately, and that is a failure to define terms that are commonly used, but not used the same by everyone. Lately I have read many books about consciousness, free will, and now emotions. Where books differ is not in their ability to make logical arguments, those are typically solid. They differ in their definitions of "consciousness," "free will," and "emotions," the very core subjects of the books. They use the terms freely, with no definition, assuming everyone understands what they mean, and that all books are obviously using the same definition. But, in fact, what is obvious is the authors don't mean the same thing as each other.
Here is a trivial example. I was traveling in northern Chile and there was a lake that was claimed to be the "highest lake in the world." It seemed like a reasonable...

Richard Reese (author of Understanding Sustainability): In his bestselling book, The Hidden Life of Trees, Peter Wohlleben revealed the fascinating magic and mystery of trees. He spent his childhood close to nature, where he was fascinated by the family of life. In his adult years, he has been a forest manager in Germany, continually striving to nurture the health of the land, and minimize harms. He has spent much of his life outdoors. Consequently, he has developed a perception of reality that is quite different from the herd.
In his new book, The Inner Life of Animals, he directs his attention to animal life, which is also little understood by mainstream society — the folks who spend most of their lives in climate controlled compartments. For them, the natural world is often just a meaningless blur of scenery along the freeway, and wildlife sightings are mostly on glowing screens. The new book is a pleasant voyage into a kinder and gentler mindset. Readers are served a banquet of interesting ideas, mostly.
Wohlleben is a caring man who wishes that humans would cause far less damage and suffering in the world. That’s his message. At his home in the woods, he keeps goats, horses, rabbits, dogs, and chickens. He...
