L. Sepulveda: I highly recommend this book. I was diagnosed with hashimotos on February (30 years old). My gp said there was nothing at all i could do to slow donw or even stop its progress so I went online to research as much as i could. I read repetidly about the benefits of leaving gluten and I just didn't want to do it.
I bought this book thinking that it might be a waste of money but to my surprise the info it contains is extremely useful and is way better than what you will find on the Internet.
The book describes everything that can be wrong with your thyroid and why it doesn't nesesaraly shows up on your labs. One of the things is your inmune system (hashimotos) and there is plenty of advise on this condition.
This book convinced me of leaving gluten "for a while" but to my infinite surprise my constipation was gone from day one and my mental fog is not bad now (aka I can remember my friends names and don't forget to pick up my son from school) so I really didn't plan to eat it ever again. After about a month of my new diet I had a blood test and to my delight my TSH was within normal range! I don't know if its just a cycle or the things I have done, I guess only...

Customer: This is, by far, the best book to understand thyroid problems ( and I have read a lot). It is very helpful to determine the type of thyroid problem you have...there are many! His advice regarding the importance of a strict gluten-free diet for Hashimoto's patients was a game changer and helped convince my daughter to give up wheat completely. The importance of food allergy and underlying causes for the autoimmune response causing Hashimoto's is fully explored. It also helped with the confusion around iodine supplementation. The supplement support for each condition was very helpful, but he does not give dosages. It will be important to work with a natural health care practitioner to implement many of the supplement supports recommended. It is a technical book which I purchased in kindle form. I found this format difficult for this information packed book and would recommend buying the paper book for easy referencing ( unless of course you are a kindle wiz). The only problem with this book is that it will give you superior understanding compared to your doctor/endocrinologist, and it will make you very skeptical of the modern approach taken for thyroid treatment. Definitely a 5...

Amazon Customer: I've been consciously struggling with thyroid issues for the past 3 years (and unconsciously for more like 40 years), and have been frustrated to no end with the lack of knowledge I have encountered amongst so many mainstream medical doctors. So of course this title attracted me, as I indeed still have thyroid symptoms (and some are getting worse) after 3 years of treatment. What this book DID help me with was in understanding the nature of auto-immune disorders, and why thyroid hormones will NOT work if you have Hashimoto's. It also helped me to "self-diagnose" not only that I have Hashimoto's, but that I am also insulin resistant (which is why I was falling asleep after meals all the time). These two revelations have given me some insight as to a new approach to diet I want to take, which I hope will help stabilise my blood sugar and boost my immune system, and hopefully get my weight and cortisol production back on track. It will also arm me with more info when I see my new endocrinologist next month.
So why didn't I give this book higher than 3 stars? Well, three reasons. First of all, it's horribly repetitive. In the section where he talks about the 22 different types...

Rosebud: I think this book is marvellous. Having suffered thyroid disease for nearly 20 years and being told that I must be okay because the blood test says so I have at last learned that the blood test is only accurate in one in five thyroid scenarios. The author explains that hypothyroidism may be a symptom of auto-immune disease (Hashimoto's) which has far reaching consequences for the organs and it is this condition which must be addressed if we are to be truly healthy.
The American author recommends the services of "a qualified health care practitioner" but I doubt if any NHS GP would have the time, inclination, or the resources to carry out the battery of tests required to establish the link with auto-immune disease. However, he does makes a good case for adding vitamin supplements to the diet to counteract the debilitating effects on the body although the list is a bit intimidating and also requires GP support.
The best thing about this book is that the author understands the array of symptoms and does not attempt to dismiss anecdotal evidence as so many agencies do but goes on to explain the causal links. The language can be a bit technical but there is a useful...

Sheilah. Bockett: The vital message of Dr Kharrazian's book is that, in treating Hashimoto's thyroiditis, conventional medicine focuses only on the end result, not on the cause - an immune system that has begun attacking the body itself. In fact, traditional medicine takes this piecemeal approach to all autoimmune conditions, even when the same patient experiences additional autoimmune problems - involving more and more organs or body systems. Dr Otis Kharrazian cuts right to the chase.
When I was diagnosed with my fourth autoimmune condition, I began to suspect that the original cause was not being addressed. I was elated to find confirmation from Dr Kharrazian, a scientific researcher of some standing. He goes straight to the proverbial cliff top and starts building a fence.
For those who want to understand the bio-mechanics behind their illness, Dr Kharrazian's explanations are simple, clear and informative. But like other reviewers, I was frustrated at the constant advice to consult with my healthcare professional. Yes it is intelligent to do this, and certainly, there are legal and safety considerations. But many of us with Hashimoto's and other autoimmune conditions have already...

Nenah Sylver: Datis Kharrazian has done some groundbreaking thinking, research, and writing. He excels in putting together some very complicated data, from a variety of disciplines, into a coherent protocol that addresses not only thyroid disorders, but all autoimmune issues.
First, of the over 50% of people in the United States who suffer from hypothyroidism, the vast majority have an autoimmune condition that's attacking the thyroid. So while the end RESULT is hypothyroidism, the CAUSES are many and varied, and other systems are affected as well. To name just a few other interconnected systems and problems: leaky gut/poor digestion; adrenal exhaustion, which leads to malfunction; impairment of the liver (where the unabsorbable T4 thyroid hormone is converted into the more active and absorbable T3 thyroid hormone); and of course, environmental pollutants or heavy metals such as mercury, which can damage every system in the body.
The problem with giving people thyroid hormone is that it may not address what caused the hypothyroid symptoms in the first place. (Note I said "MAY not address"; some people do very well taking natural thyroid hormone or a synthetic T3/T4 compound.)...
