I'm angry that this nut job has motivated me to eating better, but he has. Maybe out of anger. Maybe because he actually sewed the pieces together better. But I'm glad I know what to believe (the main thesis) and what to totally eject (every other part of the book including chemical and physical explanations of the thesis).
ORIGINAL REVIEW: Mercola is a crackpot.
There. I said it. Lots of truth in this book, but nothing new. And lots of nonsense.
Anyone who has been on Atkins for the last 15 years, modifying their diet based on the research watered down for lay people, would have done the same thing. For example, mTOR has been talked about on all health forums for the last few years (a Google search has over 6 million hits). Atkins original book says fat is preferable to protein, so modifying your diet to have more fat than protein is still Atkins. Nothing new here, folks. Atkins + mTOR is the point of this book.
Look, Mercola did a LOT of "internet research" for this book. His problem is that he can't tell the difference between real science, pop science,...

Areana: This work by Dr Mercola is full of well researched information that may save your life and application of which will certainly improve it. Having been diagnosed with breast cancer that feeds off estrogen, I was told by medical professionals that diet doesnt matter snd then prescribed a drug that causes cancer and destroys health. I also had lymph nodes removed based on the advice I received, but this turned out to be unnecessary. I was also told that losing lymph nodes didn’t matter as there are many in the body, well, not true- it’s almost 2 years later and I still have major swelling from the operation.
I very highly recommend this book for anyone looking for good nutritional advice, particularly if you are suffering from a chronic or serious disease. When diagnosed, I was afraid to do any research, leaving the decisions to the “experts”. This is the wrong strategy, arm yourself with the knowledge and the facts and take control of your treatment. Medical professionals are there to serve you, and if they’re smart, to be open to the possibility that they dont know everything.

Christine lee: 4 Stars to catch your eye :) Five is a fair mark.
It's a v good book which tries quite successfully to instruct the reader on the
links between food, lifestyle and health. Anyone trying to understand metabolic healing will do well to
read it with the caveat that it is not an easy topic to fully grasp from scratch. I have been using LCHF diet
at Real Meal Revolution dot com for a couple of years now and have learned a lot from Tim Noakes and Co., too.
I have watched my health for 40 plus years which makes it easier to grasp the Mercola information (which is
beautifully articulated - he's a good communicator). I have read and noted it all the way through and found
good ideas here as well as lucid explanations of ideas with which I am familiar but which and not been explained
quite so well as in this book. His cronometer site is way complex and full of things to buy. I am passing for the time as there is a good food counter on Real Meal (above). Perhaps as I become more sophisticated(I am already reading this book for the 2nd time) I will venture to use the chronometer. For now I am trying to grasp the subtleties and fine tune what I eat. It has the...

Peter: I have been using ketogenic and carb cycling principles in weight training for the last two years with great results - so bought this book to keep up with the current research/trends.
It's an interesting book - the scientific basis for the approach to living is thoughtful and Mercola draws on numerous good quality scientific studies that are well referenced, he is also reasonably clear about what is and isn't known on the subject and research questions to be explored which is refreshing in popular scientific writing!
As for the actual diet approach itself - this is where the science starts to dwindle and becomes quite extreme...
There were a number of issues I had difficulty with - notably Mercola's argument around the risks of high levels of iron in the blood - this risk appeared to be grossly overestimated in his book, in fact many people struggle with the reverse, perhaps most worrying was that he advocates regular blood letting as a key recommendation of the diet. The main way to do this he recommends is via regular blood donation in order to keep iron levels low, or if this is not possible to ask your doctor to take blood as a therapeutic intervention or...

nasagolfer: This is the first book that I've bought that Dr. Mercola has authored. I have to say that I'm going to have to buy more of Dr. Mercola's books. I'm glad that I preordered this book because I've had one of those conversations with my doctor about my chances of having cancer. Its not fun. For the first time in your life you will go around with the thought that what you are doing and what you are seeing may be the last things you do and see on this good ole earth. You think about how life will simply go on without you around. People will have to get used to not seeing your smiling face any more. Good Lord it can put you in a heavy place. After all, your doctor went to school to know his stuff. You didn't.
Then along comes a book like this, that says you might be more in charge of your destiny than you know. You might be able to change your diet and take control of your health in a way that maybe a doctor is not able to do for you with the tool set they learned in the school they attended.
This book literally gives you a tool set to tackle your health situation and try to take charge of it and maybe even turn it around.
I've followed Dr. Mercola's web site and email messages...

Patrick McKeown Author of The Oxygen AdvantagePatrick McKeown Author of The Oxygen Advantage: Professor Tim Noakes, author of The Lore of Running suggests that people who are exercising are loading up too much on carbohydrates, whereas they would be better on a high-fat, low carbohydrate diet. Unfortunately, the sugary sports industry has associated itself with healthy habits such as physical exercise.
Dr Robert Lustig likens sugar to drugs. Just as cocaine and heroin are addictive and toxic, so is sugar. His advice is to wean off sugar and consider it as a treat only, not part of a staple diet. Lustigs book: Fat Chance: The Bitter Truth about Sugar is based on sixteen years of studying the effects of sugar on the central nervous system, metabolism and disease.
The general public have been conned to believe that it's all about calories and nothing about sugar. This ply was a great tactic for the sugar industry to divert attention from the harmful effects of sugar. Counting calories is not the answer. The effect of a calorie from sugar is totally different to that from grass fed beef, butter or olive oil.
Fat for Fuel uncovers the truth behind what causes obesity. This book is an excellent self help bible containing detailed advice on what to eat and...
