Angela SungAngela Sung: This is a birthday present for my sister and she loves it so much. The only thing is that there is a crack on the compass, which is a bit unsatisfying. However there is nothing to complain on for a second-hand book at such low price.

DF: Bought this for my daughters 8th birthday. Her favorite gift she actually fell asleep with it in bed.
For the kid who likes things to be factual, loves that pirates were compensated for the loss of a limb ($100 for a finger, $200 for and eye, $400 for a leg)

DevilDevil: Another amazing book in the ologies series. Already have wizardology and mythology and this is an excellent addition. All the pieces were present but two pieces of paper were torn, doesn't concern me much as none are missing. The threads were knotted as it's Pre-loved. Over all really happy with the book at this price. Great and honest seller. Yet to read the book, very excited. Loved all the others that we have in the series.

Bookapotamus: These books are so darn fun! For kids, teens, and even (who I bought mine for!) husbands! lol My husband is a huge pirate fan and he loves this. I was bummed that it didn't have the compass that spun on the cover, but my mistake for assuming so.

The story is really good too. Easy to read, not tiny reader level, but mid-level. (maybe 10+) A male pirate chasing a female pirate! Totally engaging and silly - but its lends a great deal to the of history of piracy through amazing illustrations that are beautiful for everyone, but even much more so for little ones! There are really cool little foldouts and things you can open like envelopes and notebooks. There are maps and a whole bunch of interactive items included in the book. But the book is still really durable - I'd be careful of tiny fingers pulling and grabbing these details, but the idea behind them is super fun.

Neem: My pre-teen grandchildren love these "ology" series books. I bought a couple of them last year for Christmas and they went over really big. This year I thought I'd do some more of them and this was one choice. I have looked it over and found it interesting myself (not being much informed about Pirates). The front cover on this is really attractive. There are two (plastic) red jewels, one on either side of the brightly colored and well depicted compass. And there is a real compass in the very center, sure to please and delight the younger set. How many kids have even seen a compass this day and age, yet followed how to use one. Cover is not black as it looks in the ad. Is a very dark brown made to resemble leather. The "ology" books are arranged so that topics are very often covered in separate areas of the pages. I have to help the kids read the script boxes, because (unfortunately in my opinion) cursive is no longer taught in our county public schools. And here is one example of how we are cheating them by doing so. There is discussion and pictures of parts of the ships, different historical pirate figures, different flags,pirate weaponry, old world cartography, types of...

Scrooge McDuck: This is the second 'Ology' book I have read (after  Wizardology: The Book of the Secrets of Merlin (Ology Series) ) and it's just as much fun. The book itself takes the form of a Captain's Log belonging to Captain William Lubber, a man hired to find and capture notorious female pirate Captain Arrabella Drummond. She has hidden a stash of treasure somewhere too, and the book contains a shred of the map, but Lubber cannot decipher the code or identify the island.

You might think that the nature of this book means that the story will be somewhat limited in development considering the narrative, but Duglald Steer does manage to make it consistently entertaining and educational, and even manages to pull off a nice twist at the end. The only complaint I have is that a couple of pages don't have any hidden goodies, and only a few of them extend beyond simple fold-outs. Besides that, it's a great book and I recommend it to children and adults alike. These books are sturdy, but they are also very tall, so you need to make sure you have bookshelves large enough.

David Stapleton: Technically, this is a fictional work; however, I feel more comfortable lumping it in with the family of pre-teen picture books that cover the history of pirates during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, a period more commonly referred to as the Golden Age of Piracy. The author uses the story of a fictional pirate hunter chasing an equally fictional female pirate to provide a framework on which to hang tidbits of pirate history.

Like the Eyewitness, Discovery and Kingfisher family of youth picture books, this one is crowded with illustrations and brief passages of historical prose that provide a basic background on piracy suitable for children and those with limited attention spans. There the comparison stops, Pirateology goes well beyond by providing an interactive element with the numerous foldouts, mock notebooks, sealed envelopes with inserted maps and notes, and variety of other interactive items sure to keep the reader engaged.

The prose is not difficult, but does include enough vocabulary to stretch young minds. The artwork varies from a vintage sepia look to colorful original artwork. The overall presentation is excellent and looks reasonably durable. I...
