As some have stated it is similar to a thick towel, but there are a lot more loops per square inch which makes it very dense and luxurious to step out onto while also being able to be machine washed and dried like a towel. It does not have any latex backing to disintegrate in the wash so you have to step carefully to prevent slipping. It does not slip while you are standing on it and absorbs water very nicely. I have a small bathroom so the size is perfect. It is finished on all four sides so you can turn it either way that fits in your room. I use it with the narrow end toward the tub so it is simultaneously a mat in front of the toilet.
