CalvinCalvin: I bought this 13 years ago and have been using it on and off for bike commuting. Overall it works very well and works great with the Topeak rack. It attaches very securely. I also bought the rain cover and that works great too.

I currently use this on a 5 mile bike commute. I can fit my 17” laptop in one pannier, my lunch and bike lock in the other pannier, and a change of clothes in the trunk.

If this bag is perfect on the bike, its only downside is that it’s very awkward to carry around off the bike, especially when the panniers are deployed. It doesn’t rest against your body in a natural way. Also if the panniers are deployed, you can’t set it down on the ground or a table without it flopping over or falling down. Mine has started to develop holes at the seams on the bottom of the panniers (as pictured), probably because I have to set it on the ground off the bike. While it probably wasn’t intended to be used this way, I wish the bottoms of the panniers were more durable (like the panels that hold them.)

I’ve probably maxed out the lifespan of this bag, and might just buy a new one.

MaiJo: I bought this for a week-long trip to France. It isn't cheap but quite a spread in the lowest to highest price asked for this; needless to say I checked all Amazon sellers for the best price. This is a sturdy piece of kit and therefore it is not light. But if you are touring you won't be worried about every gramme in your kit, as long as you get something in return for the extra weight. This bag delivers that. The top bag is obviously robust but the fold-out panniers are a great surprise. They really are a heavy duty fabric. And they took jeans and sweatshirt for the cooler evenings, swimwear, washbag, two complete change of light sports clothes, beach sandals. In the top box I had my emergency tools, spare inner tube, heavyweight Kryptonite lock, raingear. Being able to just clip and unclip from the rack is a great asset on the ferry, at the hotel and especially on the train where there may not be room in the bicycle space with the panniers bulging. It can be tricky to line up the rail when the panniers are full as they need to be held away from the rack to engage the rail and a couple of times I had to ask someone to hold the bike still whilst I did that. Overall, great value...

This bag is pretty slick when used in conjunction with one of Topeak's racks (I have the Explorer). Just slide the thing on and go. Packing for my commute has never been easier. Without the rack, however... you can probably find better. Yes, the quick mount option makes that big of a difference. It sounds relatively minor, but then you use it and find that it turns a decent bag into a great bag.

I'm 5'9 and 195 lbs (so probably wear the same sizes as many of you reading this). The trunk bag itself is large enough to fit a pair of pants and a shirt without expanding the top, but it wouldn't really accommodate my shoes, even with the top expanded. The expandable top is diagonal (which makes sense, as the trunk bag nestles right underneath the back edge of my seat), so it's not a full 2" of additional space. Still, it's a nice option to have if you have something that'll ALMOST fit... or you happen to be much larger than I am and need the space for your clothing. The trunk bag itself is, additionally, sectioned off using a small divider. I pushed it off to one side, since it only served to make things more difficult for my particular usage. It's...

I've now been using Topeak's MTX Trunk Bag (AKA the "Junk-in-the-Trunk Bag") for a good six months. Not a single day has gone by that I haven't been glad I bought the thing. I also purchased the rain cover that Topeak sells to go with it, which is also great. Depending on what I'm doing on the bike, the MTX Trunk bag carries anything from a few tools and some snacks to a full-on one- to two-man picnic. It also still looks great so far.
