Andrew: For what it is, this is an excellent product for the price. It only uses a few drops of liquid, hold it directly under a light(I use my range hood) and it is very easy to read. It even has an adjustable eyepiece focus to make the scale crystal clear. HOWEVER, I bought this under the impression that I could measure OG and FG of my home brews. While it seems to measure OG within 1-2 SG points of my hydrometer, the FG will be WAY OFF(mine showed 15 SG points higher) of the actual SG measured with hydrometer. This is because refractometers are not calibrated for alcohol content, and the presence of alcohol will throw off the measurement. It doesn't mean this is a bad product, just that refractometers and not capable of measuring SG of liquid with alcohol in it. There are, however, calculators online that estimate the actual FG, given the refractometer readings at OG and FG. While I'm yet to confirm the accuracy of these online calculators, I will continue double-checking the FG with my hydrometer just to be sure. I have become confident enough to only use the refractometer to measure the OG.

mcronin: Purchased for use with maple sugaring. It is fine for measuring the sugar content of maple sap but the Brix scale does not go high enough to measure sugar content in syrup. My mistake when purchasing. Works as described and designed.

Amazon Customer: I'm a home brewer and wanted to try a refractometer. I've used them in the past for automotive uses, but had problems being able to read them. I saw this one, had good reviews and was inexpensive. When I first opened it, I noticed it is really light because of the plastic body. I checked the calibration with distilled water and only had to make a small adjustment. I then checked the gravity of mead I was making and compared it to my hydrometer. They were the same and the refractometer was easier to read. I am really impressed with this thing. I no longer waste wort taking gravity readings, just a small amount on the lens. This has made my life easier.

Stol: Works well, not sure exactly how accurate it is, but it definitely gives a good ball park reading using only a few drops or wort.

Andrew Barney: I've been using this for my landrace watermelon breeding project (some of which are low sugar citron-melons and [Citron-melon X domestic watermelon] hybrids). The brix meter seems to work and while i don't know if it is accurate, it seems to be. One would need access to a known good brix meter to compare to. Many of the citron-melons measure sugar in the 2-4% range. Domestic watermelon seem to measure at 10% (the low end) and above. So, yes, seems to work great!

Easy to use. Just squeeze watermelon juice on it to measure. One probably could measure out a 50/50 ratio of distilled water and sugar and see if it measures correctly. I imagine it would.

Very Happy with my purchase! Would recommend. Would buy again! Best purchase i have made these last couple of years! If you are reading this, buy one now, you will not be disappointed.

K. Whittemore: This is my first refractometer and it appears to work well. I want to bring up my wine making game a notch or two and this is what they say I need. It calibrated very easy and then it was a breeze to check my wine mix (must). The price is great and I can't see were a more expensive one would be much better. It's a basic prism design that seems quite sturdy and accurate.

I would buy again without hesitation ... although this one appears to be good enough I probably won't need to.
