Samantha Wasson: I just got my refractometer in the mail yesterday and finally used it today. I've been making some homemade mango wine using fruit from a friend's tree (gotta love the season!) and didn't take an OG hydrometer reading. So, per recommendations all over Google, I needed to get a refractometer in order to determine an accurate estimate of final ABV. The instructions say that we need to calibrate it using olive oil (or honey) and make sure it says "70.5"; however, I have absolutely no idea where to get that number as it is not anywhere - not outside or inside. It was 100% white inside so I took this reading as accurate and true. Although it's not ready to be bottled, I saved some wine from when I racked it a few days ago and tested it on the refractometer. Now I can see that there's white and blue inside, but the differentiating line is not super clear. No worries though. I can't wait to get to use it when it's time to get a final reading! The nerd in me is extremely excited.

Not2Lucky: This made my home brewing so much easier by measuring the specific gravity without wasting Wort, and being able to do it quickly so I do not subject the warped to the outside environment that much.
The only downside is the latch on the case. I know it's a minor point, however the latch that holds the carrying case closed is just bad. It breaks off easily, it is difficult to open, I am sure I'll end up just wrapping it with a rubber band in a few months. Unfortunately from the other pictures from the competitors here they all use the same carrying case.

Paul S. Remington: I've come to rely on this refractometer quite a bit since I purchased it. It's so easy to use, and it doesn't waste wort/beer when taking a reading, like typically occurs using a standard hydrometer. You use two or three drops--that's it. When you first get it, it's best to perform a reading with distilled water to ensure it's calibrated. The refractometer comes with a plastic pipette and a small jeweler's screwdriver. You use the screwdriver to adjust calibration with distilled water by setting it at 0. Mine came perfectly calibrated out of the box, so no adjustment was needed. The refractometer, pipette, and screwdriver are housed in a nicely foamed, light-blue plastic storage case.
When taking a reading with ethanol (alcohol) present, be sure to convert this reading. Refractometers don't provide an accurate reading in the presence of ethanol, but this is easily corrected by using a refractometer calculator. There are a number of them on the Internet. This refractometer features automatic temperature correction (ATC), which adjusts its reading for different sample temperatures.

Greg: If you are getting into brewing do not hesitate to purchase this piece of equipment. I used this for the first time on my last batch of beer and for the first time I felt like I had control of the process. This unit will make you a better brewer!
Unbelieve how simple it is to use. Couple drops and a glance and you know what your SG is.
It came calibrated and ready to roll. I measured the SG all through the mashing process (as mentioned, for the first time) and felt as if I REALLY knew what was going on. It was no longer a guessing game or hope and a prayer. Measure at the end of the mash. Measure as you sparge. Measure at pre-boil. Measure during boil. Measure pre-fermentation. With a little knowledge (and math) you can create your calculations and see if you are hitting your numbers.
Definitely a must-purchase item.
