Ocean: "A Throne of Glass" by Sarah J. Maas is a captivating and thrilling fantasy novel that takes readers on a gripping journey through a world of magic, assassins, and political intrigue. The story follows Celaena Sardothien, a skilled assassin, as she is offered a chance at freedom by competing in a deadly tournament. Maas weaves a richly detailed and imaginative world, and her characters are complex and intriguing. The book is filled with action, romance, and unexpected twists that keep you turning the pages. While some may find the pacing a bit slow at times, the overall story and character development make it a must-read for fantasy enthusiasts.

The Fantasy Review: Spoiler-Free Throne of Glass Book Review

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas is a book that has been on my TBR for many years but I never got around to it. I'm not a big reader of YA romance fantasy things, but with how popular this series is I thought it was about time I at least gave the first book a go.

Despite it definitely being tropey, I really enjoyed the book!

An Intriguing Plot

I'll be honest - I wasn't expecting much of a plot from Throne of Glass but I was pleasantly surprised! Not only did we get a Hunger Games-type of premise, but there is also a mystery behind the scenes.

My only complaint would be that it's revealed quite a bit of the mystery events occur off-page and I think I would have loved to see some more of what was going on.

I was kept on my toes, unable to guess what was coming next throughout the book. Sure, I knew generally how the book would end, but how the main character got there wasn't straightforward.

Fantastic Characters

Our assassin is the main character and she is fab. There were a few moments I didn't like, but they were brief and I just ignored them as through most of the book she was...

MM Reviewer: 5 glistening stars for the ‘Throne of Glass’ by Sarah J Maas who in my opinion reigns supreme as the Queen of Fantasy.

From the opening chapters we are treated with excellent world building, fascinating characters, and vivid descriptive prose that transports the reader into the world of dark fairy tales. A place I can quite easily stay when the story delivers this much.

This is total escapism at its best. Easy to read, captivating, adventurous, and with the requisite adrenaline rush you come to expect with these Fantasy stories but with some humour and a bit of romance thrown in to add more appeal.

The Storyline

Notorious assassin, eighteen-year-old Celaena Sardothien, has been locked up in Endovia’s death camp for the last year. A salt mine where few get out alive. So, when Dorian the Prince of Adarlan nominates Celaena as his champion, Celaena seizes the opportunity to win her freedom. Her challenge to become the Kings Champion is to beat the other 24 competitors in a series of trials, not all of them in physical battle, but survival of the fittest in mind, body, and spirit. If she wins, she only has to remain with the king for 4 years and then...

Myth979: TW: mentions of rape

I have conflicting feelings about a lot of YA in general (or maybe New Adult? I can't seem to figure out where the lines are between the two). Most of the conflicting feelings stem from the treatment of female characters and/or feminist/attempted feminist messages in the narrative (to the surprise of exactly no one who knows anything about me). I feel like Throne of Glass is a very good example of the books I have problems with.

Throne of Glass was presented to me as 'assassin Cinderella Game of Thrones by way of Tamora Pierce'. Graceling was also mentioned. So I did my research. I read reviews. I read/watched a couple of author interviews. Much was said about wanting strong women to look up to in books, which the author felt were lacking. Sabriel and The Hero and the Crown were mentioned as being something the author wanted more of. I bought the book.

I have to give the author credit where credit is due - I do believe she tried. Some of the ideas were very interesting. There was lip service given to female friendship. There was a line commenting on women who tear down other women to look appealing to men. She put in a woman of color, who...

Dani: Celaena Sardothien, Adarlan's Assassin - feared, fierce, lethal. Everyone in Erilea knows her name, a name synonymous with death. But then betrayed, caught, tried, convicted, Celaena is sentenced to a lifetime in the unforgiving salt mines of Endovier as punishment for her many crimes. In an ironic twist of fate, she's offered the chance to compete to become the Champion of the very king who condemned her; in doing so, earning her freedom... and possibly becoming Erilea's best hope against the dark forces that would seek to destroy it.

Celaena. Celaena is a character who could be considered rather... off-putting had I not read the prequel novellas that lead up to Throne of Glass. She's irritatingly arrogant, projects an unwavering confidence, she's overbearingly prideful, prickly, a bit of a know-it-all, she's selfish, spoiled, abrasive, a bit of a snob, and of course, an extremely lethal assassin.

Right about now you're probably saying, "And you like her... why?"

Because while she's most certainly flawed, and possibly more than most protagonists, the four novellas prior give the reader a front row seat as to the circumstances that brought Celaena to the salt...
