Sally M. Duffy: Interesting in terms of vestal virgins: their duties, clothing, rites, etc. good story line although Pomponia’s love for Quintus is a stretch since he was rather awful.

Jack Spratt: I am fascinated with Roman history and have been to Rome, including the Forum and the remains of the Vesta Temple, Pompeii and Tivoli, so the history and staging of this novel were familiar. That familiarity may have influenced my appreciation of this book, but the story, the history and the characterizations of the people, both real and fictional was expertly done. I confess I was not that familiar with the historical details of the Vestal Virgins so learning about them and why they were so important to Roman society, filled in a segment of ancient Rome that was fascinating. Weaving good history with a page turning story is a gift and Ms. MacLeod did a wonderful job in this novel. Other's, who were not as familiar with Roman history, said that Ms. MacLeod's web site provided them with a good base knowledge that enabled them to really appreciate the times and the story. While I was already knowledgeable of the real characters in Roman history I appreciated the fact that Ms. MacLeod provided a listing of the people referenced in the book in addition to Roman and Greek gods and goddesses and a glossary of Roman and Greek terms used in the text. I book marked them and referred to...

Victoria Rice: I liked the story being written from the point of view of a Vestal Virgin. I love Roman history of the early Imperial period, so it's wonderful to read and see it come to life. As far as the plot and conclusion, it was just kinda.... meh. I'm going to continue the series, as the author did a great job of bringing the characters to life. The story was just lacking.
