Mr. PD Sargent: This was most definitely a better story. Nice how river god was incorporated into the story.
My only regret with the story is that Taita still has an influence in this story line.

Amazon Customer: Love the sheer amount of detail that Wilbur Smith has gone into with The Seventh Scroll; particularly when describing the contents of tombs and the monastery. Actually makes you feel as though you are there exploring it yourself.

Martin C: This is another book in his Egyptian series which I believe there 8 all together. They all follow the ups & downs of the Hero Taita, who serves a number of pharaohs. Some of these are good and some are bad & violent. It exciting following the actions of Taita through his adventures and adversities. This makes each book difficult to put down and try to secure the follow-on books to continue the saga.

Robert Pounder: I read this book in the 1990’s when it was published. I loved it then , I haven’t read much Wilbur Smith in the intervening years , but when he died I thought I re-read a few favorites. This one is one of those, it’s still as good as ever.

Marianne: In 1988, Wilbur Smith was invited by archaeologists working a dig on the West Bank of the Nile to view the remains of an unknown Queen buried with all of her treasures - possibly circa 1780 B.C. The most precious of this find were papyri scrolls authored by an individual living 4,000 years ago and translated by experts at the university of Cairo. What was obvious in the scrolls was that the ancient author had loved his Queen. Although he was a braggart, he also had appealing human qualities such as a loving spirit, compassion and an innovative mind. These scrolls inspired the author to create Taita. One cannot avoid becoming attached to this mythic character who is a physician, artist, poet, engineer; the perfect deus ex machina.
In order to get the full effect of this second book of the series, RIVER GOD must be read first. Taita is peripheral to the present day action in THE SEVENTH SCROLL, but one is always aware of his spirit. Andrew Fernandez: I like Wilbur Smith's writing style.
I think he does a great job of creating a compelling fictional story intertwined with plenty of true historical references and with placement in real-life locations and other real-life artifacts.
I read the book in about a month of on and off reading and enjoyed the characters.
The drawbacks of this author are that: 1) he can name-drop too much in describing the rich lives the characters lead and how they accessorize their material lives, and 2) the most egregious thing about the book is that Wilbur references 'River God,' in the book and himself too. I would never do that and find it offensive that an author needs to actually refer to himself in a fictional novel. That's just tactless and ruins what could be a superlative fictional book.
If you don't mind these too much - and I guess I didn't - and love Egyptology, then I'd recommend the book.
